School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-- These biographies concentrate on the young years of their subjects with some information on their later lives and why they are remembered. Both are fictionalized in terms of dialogue and characters' thoughts, but Robert Louis Stevenson gives a straightforward timeline of his life, with less made-up dialogue. The quotations cited are often from of his writings and relate to the : problems he faced in becoming a writer. The book is clear about his illnesses and daydreamings as a child and how these factors contributed to his later work. This brief volume could serve as an introduction to Stevenson's poems and stories. Abigail Adams is not told chronologically, which may be confusing to children looking for the important facts of her life. Both books are illustrated with black-and-white drawings. These titles are not meant for research and should be introduced with caution because of their fictionalized contents. --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
