Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
"Twi-hards" looking to get their hands on anything they can about Robert Pattinson will be pleased about this title in the "Star Biographies" series. Roughly half the book covers Pattinson's life before making it big in the movie Twilight. Raised in suburban London, Pattinson was a troublemaker at school and ultimately expelled at age twelve from a preparatory school in London. The new school he attended allowed him to foster his love of music and acting. Pattinson went from acting in school plays to joining a local theatre company, where he was discovered by an agent. His first big role was in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but it was his role as brooding vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight that made him an instant celebrity. The author discusses the fan mania surrounding Pattinson, his meteoric rise to success, his much-talked about hair, and his upcoming projects. Devoted fans will probably enjoy this despite its slight content, which covers basic facts. This series may attract older teen readers interested in the stars, but the wholesome content and writing level are aimed at more of a tween audience. Short chapters, bright colors, a varied layout, quotes from interviews, sidebars, and ample pictures make this short book a quick read. A glossary, further reading, index, and links to internet sites via the publisher's FactHound website are included. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor

Gr 3-6-These fluffy biographies are visually attractive but have little substance. The bold graphics and colorful sidebars give the series a teen-magazine feel, with topics such as hairstyles and fashion choices at the forefront. Short, simple sentences discuss family background, career highlights, and other personal bits of information that generally stick to more positive, less controversial topics. Tweens looking for fun browsing will be drawn to these books, but that's about their only use.
