Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greta Holt
The difficulties inherent in writing about a teen heartthrob include deciding how much to tell about his life (pre-blockbusters) and deciding which tone to use: breathless or informative. Schuman accepts the challenges with skill. His narrative tells readers about Pattinson's early school life, interests, and beginning acting career. Pattinson attended the London private schools of Tower House and Harrodian, modeling and taking part in a rap trio. He was a mediocre student who liked drama. His father made him pay for Harrodian until his grades came up. Schuman emphasizes the difficulties of the acting life, even for those who are talented and well off. The character Pattinson played was cut from his first major movie opportunity; he was fired from a theatre production before it premiered, and for years he acted well, but in obscurity, in independent films. His first appearance in the blockbuster arena was as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. Then, he was chosen for the part of Edward in the Twilight series. Pattinson has continued to act in other movies, some with good reviews and other without critical acclaim. Schuman seems to want his young audience to view the acting life realistically, while admiring Pattinson's abilities and appeal. The book is formatted clearly and chronologically. The pictures are beautiful, and olive green asides give extra information on other actors, and roles Pattinson has played. An excellent timeline, a further reading section, filmography, glossary and index conclude this attractive and informative book. Reviewer: Greta Holt
