Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Weiss (architecture, Tulane Univ.; City in the Woods: The Life and Design of an American Camp Meeting in Martha's Vineyard) attempts a book-length treatment of the first academically trained black American architect, but she is hampered by the paucity of personal information on her subject. Between 1892 and 1932, Robert R. Taylor designed and oversaw the construction of dozens of buildings on the Tuskegee University campus, including dormitories, classroom buildings, barns, a dining hall, and the campus chapel. These elegant classical structures, designed by a black architect and built by the school's black students, were a potent visual image of the educational ideals of Booker T. Washington. The history of the buildings and Washington's hopes and plans for the campus make for compelling reading; however, the chapters on Taylor's life suffer from a lack of biographical information. VERDICT Best suited for those with an interest in the story of the Tuskegee campus buildings. Readers interested more generally in black architects of this period will want to consult African American Architects: A Biographical Dictionary, 1865–1945 and Melvin L. Mitchell's The Crisis of the African-American Architect: Conflicting Cultures of Architecture and (Black) Power.—Amy Trendler, Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, IN
