Kirkus Reviews
In the tenth of the Baseball Card Adventures, young Joe "Stosh" Stoshack goes back in time to warn star player and renowned humanitarian Roberto Clemente not to board the plane full of relief supplies that crashed, killing him, in 1972. Throwing in a little something for his audience's grandparents, the author has Stosh overshoot the mark to land in 1969-at Woodstock, just in time to hear Jimi Hendrix play the "Star Spangled Banner" and then to catch a ride with hippies in a VW bus to a game in Cincinnati where he gets an inspirational pep talk from the hero himself after witnessing some of the man's amazing on-field feats. Hardly does Stosh get a chance to absorb what he's learned about baseball and about caring for others than his own great-grandson arrives to carry him forward in time to 2080, where humanity hangs on the verge of extinction thanks to global warming. A less veteran author might struggle to pack all of this in, but Gutman delivers just the right blend of action and information before closing with both a table of Clemente's career stats and a list of eco-activist websites. (Baseball fantasy. 10-12)
Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
"A Baseball Card Adventure," this is a fun and innovative way to weave facts into a fictional story. The premise is that Joe Stoshack (Stosh) has the ability to time travel with the help of baseball cards from the targeted year. When Stosh's Spanish teacher tells him about her connection to baseball player and humanitarian Roberto Clemente, he decides to warn Clemente about the timing and circumstances of his death. Stosh lands in the middle of the Woodstock music festival in 1969, so he also tries to warn Jimi Hendrix to stay away from drugs. He meets Clemente, who patiently listens to his story and promises to consider not getting on the fated airplane. Stosh also meets his great grandson, who shows him what global warming has done to our future planet. Stosh promises to help slow down global warming. In the end, he has the most influence on his Spanish teacher's life. In an afterword, the author discusses which portions of his story are factual and which are pure fiction. He also provides resources for finding out more about Roberto Clemente and the environment. The story is fast paced and should hold a boy's interest. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
VOYA - Mark Irish
This is the author's tenth book in the baseball adventure series. Time traveler and baseball fan Joe "Stosh" Stoshack travels through time to convince baseball great Roberto Clemente not to get on an airplane delivering supplies needed for earthquake-devastated Nicaragua. That flight ultimately ends Clemente's life on December 31, 1972 after it crashes into the ocean. After arriving in 1969, Stosh attends a Jimi Hendrix concert where he meets Sunshine, and they go together via Volkswagon Bug to warn Clemente not to board the plane. When returning home, he meets his great grandson who travels through time to warn him of the future. Stosh —for the first time—travels to the future and discovers how he has to change the mind-set of the present in order to prevent future environmental disaster. This is a great book for reluctant readers and baseball fans. Reviewer: Mark Irish

Newest Baseball Card Adventure - It's a Blast to the Past

I am 9 years old and have read all of Dan Gutman's baseball card adventure books. I started in third grade and now I am reading the newest book that I received in my Easter basket. I love all of the stories since I play baseball and love sports, especially baseball! The books are about a young boy that finds a baseball card and goes back in time to the time of the player that the story is about. The books are both exciting and educational. I found them in my classroom at my school and my twin brother and I love to read them all the time. Our grandma and mom read them to us too. My sister evens listens to the stories!

    Dan Gutman

Dan Gutmans bbooks are a good read. They are funny and educational. The baseball card adventures is a fun short read. I love how the people he writes about aren't just good baseball players they were good men on the inside too. I loved this book and stop reading the samples they are just spoilers. Try to be adventorous and read the whole tthing at one. Show some class todan gutman he deserves it!!
