La balada es el género medieval de la literatura inglesa equi­valente a los romances de nuestra literatura. En ellas se conta­ban las distintas aventuras de un héroe.
Las baladas son anónimas y fueron concebidas para ser can­tadas o recitadas por los juglares. Por eso, debido a la transmi­sión oral y a la intervención de numerosos juglares, las baladas presentan diversas versiones sobre un mismo hecho.
En el caso de Robin Hood, sus hazañas se narran en más de treinta baladas. Éstas fueron recogidas en un verdadero poema épico: The gest of Robin Hood. La obra, impresa alrededor del año 1500, agrupa los distintos episodios sobre la vida del héroe.
A lo largo del tiempo, las andanzas de Robin Hood han ins­pirado obras literarias -como es el caso de Ivanhoe (1819), de Walter Scott.
Asimismo, la vida del héroe de Sherwood ha sido llevada al cine. Robin Hood ha sido protagonista de numerosas películas, algunas de ellas de dibujos animados.
A este personaje también se le conoce en España con el nombre de Robin de los Bosques.
