Overview

Oakdale is shut down during a blackout, and Joe's big chance to get noticed by the eighth-grade basketball coach will be left in the dark--unless he and Wishbone can somehow hightail it across town to the game in time! Their adventure reminds Wishbone of Daniel Defoe's great tale Robinson Crusoe. Wishbone imagines himself as Crusoe, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, tossed into a deset isle without food, shelter, or friends. He soon finds himself battling nature, wild cats, and hungry cannibals. It will take every ounce of brains and courage this canine castaway has to beat the odds and save the day!

Children's Literature - Susan Hepler
Fourth in the series. The intrepid dog time traveler imagines himself surviving on an island and retells the story of Robinson Crusoe. This tale is interspersed with a contemporary story of Joe, a middle-schooler caught home alone in a big power outage but who must get himself to the Big Game, or his team will forfeit. Based on the PBS television series, this story is told in the same manner-asides by Wishbone which only the reader can "hear." Doggy jokes, frequent illustrations, and a medium length of 142 pages make the story easier (and of course sillier) reading than the original and more challenging than the "little big book" version.
