Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Robot sumo contests are now being held worldwide, with several thousand robots busily trying to shove each other outside the ring with ever-greater aplomb. Since there are relatively few constraints on sumo robot design, this sport brings out the creativity in a robotics community that’s already intensely creative. Until now, if you wanted to get involved, you had to learn by trial and error, by watching and losing. Now, there’s a shortcut -- Robot Sumo: The Official Guide by Pete Miles.

Miles has placed in the top three in top robot sumo contents from Seattle to Tokyo; he’s also the only roboticist who’s tried to compete with bipedal walking Sumo robots (no small accomplishment, if you think about it). In this book, he covers every aspect of building a competitive sumo robot, from the rules of the sport to the complexities of traction, sensors, and batteries. There’s a full chapter on making your robots move (bet you never realized those washable supermarket lint pickup tubes would make such great high-traction wheels); detailed coverage of choosing and controlling your motors; as well as practical coverage of construction techniques and materials. (And no, you won’t need a diaper.) Bill Camarda

Bill Camarda is a consultant, writer, and web/multimedia content developer. His 15 books include Special Edition Using Word 2000 and Upgrading & Fixing Networks For Dummies®, Second Edition.

    An excellent robot book.

I just received this book and it's great! There is a tremendous amount of information in this book. If you want to build a sumo robot and be competitive, this is the place to start. Complete instructions on how to construct a mini sumo robot from scratch. Charts, pictures and graphs on nearly every page. Great book.
