For the child who is interested in robots, this book will provide an amazing introduction to the types and uses of all kinds robotics. Divided into three major sections, this book uses numerous interesting pictures to fully explore the world of robotics. Section One provides the background and history of robots and reminds students of the famous robots they may already know, such as R2-D2 from Star Wars. Section Two explores how robots are currently used by humans in medicine, outer space, and even in the home. Section Three looks at robotics of the future and explores the idea of robot "intelligence." While the book is loosely divided into these three sections, each set of two to four pages addresses a new topic, so the book moves very quickly, and student interest will remain high. For a book aimed at middle grade students, most pages have relatively few words and several informative pictures, making this book one that will appeal to struggling readers as well as readers at grade level. The glossary is particularly helpful for students who have had little exposure to information on this topic, and the index is age-appropriate. The lack of a bibliography or additional resources may be a frustration, though, to students who would like to learn more about the fascinating ideas introduced in the book. Opening with a reminder that real-life robots are not yet as accomplished as those in science fiction or the movies, the editors of Yes provide a quick summary of robotic history, from Leonardo da Vinci in the 1400s through mid-20th-century innovations, before going on in more detail about the variety of robots being developed and used today. The material is up-to-date, even including recent discoveries by the Mars rovers. Although no sources are given, the acknowledgements reveal a wide variety of informants. With breezy text, Woo's cartoon-like drawings interspersed with color photographs, plentiful text boxes and a new topic on nearly every two-page spread, this is sure to attract browsers as well as those with a more sustained curiosity about this engaging topic.
