Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is a dual-level picture book that works well on both levels. A simple line of text adorns each page, "Robots hover near the stars/hundreds whirring over Mars." In addition, small fact boxes elaborate on the uses and potential future uses of each kind of robot. For, "Robots inch along the wall," we are also told of inchworm bots that can move on suction cup feet to take pictures of the undersides of bridges. For, "Robots swim and flick their tails," we are informed of future robo-fish that scientists hope to use to count fish populations. The airbrushed acrylic and collage illustrations are wonderful, with bright colors and crisp edges. Perfect for very young children who show an interest in robots and a nice starting point for older children interested in the subject. 2004, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Ages 4 to 8.

K-Gr 2-In this jovial introduction to the field of robotics, a brief, rhymed text describing robot maneuvers is paired with fast facts touting current and proposed uses for their services. From robofish that count their living counterparts to microrobots that may someday travel the bloodstream to repair cells, readers meet different mechanicals. An author's note provides historical facts, lists five Web addresses, and cites numerous technical sources including NASA. Done in airbrushed acrylic and collage, Gorton's illustrations amplify interest with imaginative cartoon scenes of human-robot interaction, and realistic sidebar drawings provide proper contrast to the more lighthearted scenes. This inviting book will encourage further reading about the topic.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Robots these days not only slither-they roll, crawl, fly in space, and "flick their tails" to "dive as deep as whales"-not to mention work in factories, fight fires, bark, meow, and even recognize facial expressions: "Look at what these robots do-smile at them, they'll smile at you!" The authors back up each rhymed claim with a specific example from the present or near future, including a slithering "snakebot," the deep-sea Odyssey II, and the lowly grass-clipping Robomower. Gorton mixes scenes of smooth-bodied people and machines with highly simplified schematics. It hardly seems like science, but it is, as well as a salutary reminder for younger moviegoers that real robots have better things to do than turn into red-eyed, rampaging killers. (Picture book/nonfiction. 5-7)
