Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
Not fair! The idea of putting on a class play in which all of the actors are boys is upsetting to the girls in the class. They threaten to go on strike. What actually happens is that Robyn and Mika decide to write their own play, The Monster That Ate the World. Robyn begins with "Once upon a time," but Maria tells her she has to begin with scenes, parts and lines. Writing a play happens to be much more difficult than Robyn had thought. She uses an eye patch, a dragon puppet and a gorilla puppet to turn herself into a three-headed monster. After a few minor adjustments and line rewrites, Robyn pulls it off. The kindergarten class loves Robyn's original play with Robyn as the monster. Yvonne Cathcart's black-and-white drawings of such monster-like puppets and a kinky-headed Robyn will capture the reader's imagination. Marketed as part of the "First Novels" series, this is the ideal paperback to introduce young readers to chapter books. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
CM Magazine
"Introduces readers to a loveable, honest character. Robyn isn't afraid to make mistakes (and she does!) or to march to the beat of her own drum. She is creative, stubborn and gutsy, and she endears audiences with the lessons she learns along the way...[It] would be of interest to many young readers. Robyn's winning personality and the challenges and tribulations of being in theatre make this book engaging. Highly Recommended."
