Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Ten be-bopping tots are making awesome music in this snappy picture book and CD set combining the talents of Kate McMullan (the author of I Stink!), artist Janie Bynum, and the Peggosus Band. Called the Rock-a-Baby Band, these toddlers are playing toy instruments, singing happily, and tapping their toes with the exuberance of infanthood. Four babies take the lead ("Charlotte plays the rattle, Denny plays the drum, Bip and Ling have bells to ring. HERE THEY COME!") with the others as "backup babies," while the rolling refrain of "Oh, shake it, baby, shake it / Shake it if you can / Shake it, baby, shake it / with the Rock-a-Baby Band," will have readers wiggling their groove things. McMullan's delightful rhymes are a breeze to read, and Bynum's playful illustrations make the words shimmy. Completing the package with the Peggosus Band's fun-loving CD inside, Rock-a-Baby Band is a true wiggle-a-palooza that kids will adore. Matt Warner

Led by four musically precocious peers, a multiethnic group of toddlers indulges in the pleasures of "Shake it, baby, shake it!/ Shake it if you can./ Shake it, baby, shake it/ with the Rock-a-Baby Band." Moving about the house with Rugrats-esque aplomb, the roundheaded, diapered group of 10 makes music in the playroom (with familiar kid toys), kitchen (after commandeering pots and pans) and backyard before returning to the house to create a baby version of a mosh pit: "Charlotte's getting dizzy,/ Denny leaps around,/ Bip and Ling start giggling./ They all fall down!" Bynum's (Altoona Balboona) vivacious, unusually kinetic watercolor-and-ink pictures depict the usual gang of cute cut-ups-the baby with a backwards baseball cap playing a guitar, the pacifier-sucking infant who always seems on the verge of losing his diaper. She creates some good jokes: one baby embraces a microphone-a hairbrush attached to a plunger-while a nestful of baby birds jams along. The very young will savor the babies' sweet sassiness and their freedom (there's nary a nay-saying grown-up in sight). Multicolored type accents Bynum's jazzy palette for a finishing touch. Unfortunately, the accompanying CD, which sets McMullan's (I Stink!) text to original music, doesn't do the author any favors-the melody is repetitious and the arrangement is a bland melange of rock, swing and up-tempo blues. Babies will roll their rattles and toddlers tap their booties to the rollicking verse of Rock-a-Baby Band. The rhythmical text by Kate McMullan stars four tots jamming on a musical afternoon. They bang pots, ring bells and adroitly adapt Presley lyrics by entoning "Don't step on my new blue socks!" Little ones will love the onomatopoeia and chance to sing along while gazing at Janie Bynum's energetic watercolors. Sure to inspire pint-sized rock-n-rollers and their parents to "shake it, baby, shake it" with tambourines, spoons or whatever comes to hand. Also fun is the accompanying CD by Peggo and Paul and the Peggosus Band. 2004, Little Brown, Ages 1 to 3.

PreS-There's not much resting in the day-care center once this band starts to play. Ten toddlers leave their cribs to create an impromptu concert, with rattles, drums, and tambourines setting the rhythm. Soon everyone is shaking to the beat. Pots, pans, and other kitchenware add new sounds before the babies dance outside. Bynum's illustrations show the movement and joy this multiracial group of toddlers shares. Picture-book pros will enjoy locating the teddy bear, duck, and rattle that appear on almost every spread. The well-designed pages use both white space and colored lettering effectively. The music on the CD is low-key but bouncy, with good use of sound effects to reinforce words in the text. While not memorable, the tune will stand up to repeated listening by preschoolers without driving adults to distraction. Even without music, this lively picture book will add lots of life to storytime. Consider pairing it with Kathi Appelt's Toddler Two-Step (HarperCollins, 2000) for a dance marathon.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Ten babies boogie down in McMullan’s ebullient offering. But it’s a multicultural quartet that takes center stage ("Charlotte plays the rattle, / Denny plays the drum, / Bip and Ling have bells to ring. / HERE THEY COME!"); raucous "backup babies" accompany them. McMullan’s snappy verse is full of action words. The chorus--"Oh, shake it, baby, shake it, / Shake it if you can. / Shake it, baby, shake it / with the Rock-a-Baby Band"--will have listeners bopping along. Bynum’s full-bleed illustrations are just as captivating. Created with digital watercolors, and employing a springy palette, the images are trimmed with strong black lines, which make them appear animated. Author and illustrator are well matched here, and the result is a rockin’ choice for preschool partiers. But be warned--according to Bip and Ling, "Rockers don’t take naps." A CD is included.
