    A wonderful project

yesterday I received my 5CDset directly from Bear Family here in Germany. The set features as many as 148 !!! songs - and I am absolutely thrilled with the quality of the sound. For me it is the first time to have a chance to listen to those old recordings in a way, that I can really appreciate the clear voices and piano accompaniment. (So far I had to purchase the LP's and 45's in used condition) Maybe this describes it best: Listening to the CD's gives the impression as listening to the mastertape in the studio. In a very few places it is noticable that studio techniques in the 1950's probably wasn't as accomplished as today - but this doesn't do any harm to the whole project. The sound is clear (not muffled by poor quality sound enhancement systems) and still warm (not like so many of todays songs you hear in radio programs). To say it in a short way: ''Wonderful !!!!! James (who has contributed in many ways to finish this project despite his health problems), Cecil and J.D. would certainly be proud of this masterpiece. The boxed set is the size of an LP-album set. It comes with a book (80 pages, also size of an LP-album) with a discography and many many pictures of the Blackwoods. The information on the recording sessions and the songs is given by Dr. Charles Wolfe. It is an impressive work (although I found a small misprint - J.D. Sumner's name once is given as J. B. Sumner. But I guess something like that can happen.) and a real nice addition for my gospel music collection. I can't wait that someone convinces Bear Family to release part two of the Blackwood Brothers discography, and maybe do the same with the Statesmen.
