All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
Collector Records is owned, operated, and run by Dutch record collector Cees Klop, who appears to have never encountered an obscure independent rockabilly or early rock & roll single from the 1950s and early '60s that he didn't want to add to his collection. He started releasing LPs of his finds on his own White Label in the 1970s, issuing some 200 LPs before going digital and switching to the CD format in 1991. Some of these releases were themed, but many were delightfully and sometimes frustratingly random. This 30-track set has a theme, sort of, since every cut features piano in one way or another, and this is the 17th volume of piano tunes Klop has put out there on CD. It's a lot of fun, and full of energy, highlighted by the doo wop vocals and hard-charging piano of Wayne Hammond & the Starfires on the lead track, "Can't See Why," and sloppy, ragged and absolutely wonderful instrumentals from the Bob-Chords "Hi-Voltage", Dumpy "Piano" Rice "Cross Country Drive", the Challengers "Tidal Wave", the Continentals "Cool Penguin", and the Hi-Fi's "Pushin'". One would think, after 17 volumes of piano rock, that a kind of diminishing returns scenario would set in, but that's certainly not the case here.
