Rock Bottom: Live at the Bottom Line

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Long before the Gallagher brothers could even fling soiled diapers at one another, Ray and Dave Davies taught rock fans the meaning of brotherly hate -- more often than not spinning their battles into pure rock gold, as evidenced by the Kinks' mighty back catalog. While brother Ray has been getting the Kinks out non-stop since the '60s, Dave has been carving out a share of the spotlight solo-style, writing songs for his own albums as well as contributing tunes to the aforementioned band. Dave does plenty of both on this smartly-paced live outing, recorded at New York's intimate Bottom Line club. There's plenty of sneering energy left in the old boy, as evidenced by ...

There's plenty of sneering energy left in the old boy, as evidenced by brawny renditions of such Kink-y klassics as "All Day and All of the Night" and the proto-punk raver "I'm Not Like Everybody Else." And while some of the more well-worn numbers -- notably, teenage-kickfests such as "She's Got Everything" -- sound a bit odd emanating from a grandfatherly type, Davies balances things out with sweeter, timeless tracks such as "Love Me Til the Sun Shines." Live at the Bottom Line offers little in the way of surprises for the casual fan, but for folks looking for a new angle on some old favorites, it's more than kinda kool.
All Music Guide - Denise Sullivan
With the Kinks no longer touring, Dave Davies barnstorms the U.S. as a solo act. On these nights at New York's Bottom Line in 1997, he and his young band were on absolute fire, cooking up hard rocking renditions of Kinks classics, some penned by brother Ray, with an equal measure of Dave's own work thrown in. Demonstrating how real rock & roll is played, the band starts out jumping with "I Need You," follows with the kick of "She's Got Everything," and only gets better. "Wicked Annabella," "Picture Book," and "Death of a Clown" are more than nostalgic mid-set showings. After 24 songs, they unbelievably blaze through two rock-kid anthems, "David Watts" and "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," and they even manage to suck another life out of the heavier than heavy monster riff of "You Really Got Me." One half of a brother act shouldn't be allowed to be this good.
