Meet the Author

Dean Ellis Kohler started a band and recorded a single while serving in the Vietnam War. Today, he owns an advertising and public relations company and a mobile disc jockey business. A true Renaissance man, he's also worked as an entertainment agent, commercial artist, graphic designer, photographer, video­g-rapher, studio and concert sound engineer, sound system designer and fabricator, and television and radio broadcaster. He has remained devoted to writing, recording, and performing music throughout his life as Dean & the Mustangs, the Satellites, the Electrical Banana, the Soft Light, Spectrum, Mad Wax (and alter ego band Marc Wyld), Mousey Brown, Big Bubba & the Blockbusters, and currently as Dean Kohler. He lives in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

    Great Book

    Rock 'n Roll soldier is about a young man, just out of highschool, going to fight the Vietnam war. He isnt a soldier, just a teenager that got drafted into a terrible war.He is only nineteen, and is in the midst of a battle that lasted 20 years, and yet he managed to keep his sanity, and most of all, create a baned aptly named "Electrical Banannas". But it wasn't his idea- it was his platoon leader Captian Leadbetter. During his service, Dean Ellis Kohler played at many different venues, and had narrow escapes, but all in all, this is a very good book that describes the harrowing experience of serving in Vietnam and a story of a musician that experienced being shot at, and shooting.

    The Power of Music

    Co-authors Dean Ellis Kohler and Susan VanHecke bring us a memoir of Dean Ellis Kohler's experience in Vietnam, serving as a military policeman. The authors do an excellent job of transporting us immediately to the Vietnam War. I felt instantly connected to this young man, and I identified with his innocence, his integrity and his very real emotions. Dean Ellis Kohler had to leave a record deal behind when he was drafted and sent to Qui Nhon. But music is in Dean's soul. And so even there, in the middle of a war, Dean finds a way back to rock n' roll. The reader follows along on his journey to create a band, perform and even record an album while serving his country. The power of music allows the soldiers to escape, if just for the length of a song, from the horrors of war. The authors have written an exciting and fast-paced memoir that is layered and dynamic. I found the book inspiring and informative. You can almost hear the guitar playing between the pages. A must-read for students, history buffs and music lovers.
