Rock Star Supernova

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
In retrospect, it should have been obvious that the prefab supergroup Rock Star Supernova -- originally just "Supernova" before an older band of the same name won its injunction against them, so their name became a compound of the name of their reality TV show and their chosen name -- would choose wannabe goth superstar Lukas Rossi as their singer. Really, there was no other choice: as good as Storm Large looked naked and as powerful as Dilana was on-stage, there was no way that a group led by a disinterested Tommy Lee would choose a female as a singer, and even if Toby Rand had the best original song, he was too much of a party-hearty frat boy to fit in with ...

Really, there was no other choice: as good as Storm Large looked naked and as powerful as Dilana was on-stage, there was no way that a group led by a disinterested Tommy Lee would choose a female as a singer, and even if Toby Rand had the best original song, he was too much of a party-hearty frat boy to fit in with the rest of the crew plus, he was Australian and Lee had already gotten enough mileage out of his Crocodile Dundee impression, which started to look a little tacky around the time of Steve Irwin's death, anyway. So, it was down to Rossi, since he was perhaps the most modern rocker in the lineup. But despite a song called "The Dead Parade" -- which just happens to arrive a few weeks after My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade -- there's no modern rock here. Rock Star Supernova hardly sounds like the heavy work of the drummer from L.A. sleaze-rock legends Mötley Crüe, Izzy Stradlin's replacement in Guns N' Roses, and the bassist for Metallica. Although Lee's drums thunder as Gilby Clarke eases out bloozy riffs while Jason Newsted pins the whole thing down, this doesn't sound at all like any of their previous music: it sounds like metal guys trying to sound like Cheap Trick covering T. Rex. Which means it sounds a bit like Tiny Music-era Stone Temple Pilots and a whole lot like Enuff Z'Nuff. Lee, Newsted, and Clarke all come from decidedly different backgrounds, whose only common ground is a fondness for '70s hard rock and metal -- music from an age when rock stars not only wanted to have fun, but were expected to have fun for the rest of us, a fantasy that all three lived out until grunge crushed their dreams. The band does sound good, albeit in a studio-pro sense: with their producer Butch Walker, they've polished up their sound so much it never sounds heavy, but that doesn't detract from how Clarke throws out some pretty good hooks, or how Lee drums as powerfully as he ever has, or how Newsted puts more energy into this than the situation needs. At times it clicks, or at least the riffs do. Meanwhile, Rossi primps like he's a star already, affects a spooky growl, and often sounds overwhelmed by the backing vocals. In other words, it's pretty much exactly the album anybody who watched Rock Star Supernova was hoping for.

    Love it!

I do not know why people hate the lead singer, really I think this is a great band. I just bought the CD and can't get over it. Really if you like singers such as The Exies, Three Days Grace and bands like that then you may like this band. But I love every song. If you don't like it go away but if you just like a song or two go to Itunes. But I say get the whole CD you will be happy!

    Awsome

At first I thought they chose the wrong guy, but when I heard him sing with supernova on the last episode I thought he would fit, that is just what he did. The songs Be Yourself (and Five other Cliches), Underdog, and Its On are great song along with all the others. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who it fits. Also you cant trust reviews to tell you if you will like it, they are opinionated.

    Lukas Rossi

I watched the show and completely fell in love with Lukas Rossi's voice, he's amazingly talented. Before the season ended and they picked Lukas I was already completely amazed by his other work, especially what he did with Rise Electric. I was, however, dissapointed with this album. The lyrics are awful and the music is generic and basic. RSSN's lyrics are cliche and cheesy. The most dissapointing thing about this album about this album however is the butchering of RISE ELECTRIC's "Headspin" which seems to have lost all it's emotion. Personally, I can't even believe it's on the album. Headspin was not, and is not, a RSSN song. On most of this album Lukas doesn't even sound like Lukas, "Dead Parade" may be the closest to anything remotely Lukas, but again, the lyrics are pretty bad especially the chorus. I like Lukas because of the emotion you seem to FEEL when he sings, but this album lost that. Although I bought this album and I listen to it on occasion there's nothing to connect to, this sounds like the band that plays at your friends house party that no one remembers, it's kind of fun but it's just alright. If you're a fan of Lukas Rossi I suggest downloading some Rise Electric or looking them up on Myspace. If you do some digging you'll find a lot of really amazing things Lukas has done. This is not one of those amazing things.

Watched the show now I LOVE the album!

I got hooked on the show at the beginning of the summer, and voted for Lukas Rossi the whole time! I've been looking forward to the album's release ever since. I love his voice! Any fans of Motley Crue, Metallica, or Guns & Roses would like this album, plus those who watched the show all summer. Go get it!
