Big names have always dominated baseball, and one of the biggest in recent history is Roger Clemens—the Rocket. As a baseball great, he has shown what it means to succeed, both on the field and off, in his near quarter century of major-league service.

The Rocket: Baseball Legend Roger Clemens journeys from Clemens’s humble and sometimes difficult childhood through his illustrious career in Boston, Toronto, New York, and Houston. Clemens rose through the ranks, setting a new example of devoted work ethic and responsibility to team and fan alike. Through it all he remained a dedicated family man, not a trait usually associated with the free-for-all image of a major-league baseball player.

Joseph Janczak traces Clemens’s career from his high school days; through his University of Texas collegiate baseball (where he was given the pre-Rocket nickname of “Goose”); and on to his minor-league and major-league career. Baseball’s image when Clemens first started in the halcyon days of the mid-1980s quickly dissolved into that of a sport saddled with crises and scandals, such as gambling, steroids, strikes, and fan distrust. But Clemens rose above it all and has set an example for the fans, who he says are the reason for his hard work on the mound each game.

The Rocket includes thoughts from teammates, opponents, and Clemens himself on his legendary career. Meet the Author

Joseph Janczak is a freelance writer and a native Houstonian. He watched Roger Clemens rise from a local high school baseball ace to the international major-league star of today. He has interviewed many athletes, music stars, and other celebrities for a variety of publications and projects.

    Poorly Written

    This was was of the most poorly written books that I have read in some time. Throughout the book, it seemed as though the author would think of something and throw it into a paragraph that had little to do with the point. The author uses verbs in the wrong tense or incorrectly in many instances, thus making the book very hard to enjoy. I felt from page one that the author was in way over his head on this project and was totally disappointed in the book.

    Truth comes out in THE ROCKET

    Amazingly ahead of its time, THE ROCKET is a book which hits the nail on the head about alleged steroid use by major league players. The author traces Clemens career from first hand experience---a witness. Strikingly truthful, strikingly enjoyable.

    Rocket to fame

    I've purchased this book at the Galleria Barnes and Noble in Houston. The book is terrific. It shows how a sports figure can attain fame on the field and also keep a sense of social responsibility. Roger Clemens is a star in baseball circles and out of baseball circles on his own merits. This book is GREAT! Finally the press and media have said something positive about a celebrity.

    We saw Clemens years ago and he is just as wonderful in person as he is in this book by author Joseph Janczak. His great charity to his community is unmatched and he deserves this good media attention.
