Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Teresa Copeland
The first volume of this series left mapper Rocketo trapped in the Hidden Sea with his compass no longer working. The second volume picks up immediately after, revealing the fates of Rocketo and his friends as they discover the city in the middle of the Hidden Sea. New characters now reveal how the world was shattered and came to change so much-mostly through the greed and violence of humans, who destroy the world to get what they want. Rocketo learns the story of the first mapper and where the power source that much of the world now uses really comes from. Then this peaceful, isolated city is attacked by power-hungry Lucrene, sparking war, betrayals, and several massive shifts in fortune. Through it all, Rocketo goes on a journey of self-discovery and change. The time shifts a little dizzyingly on occasion, flipping from present to past, but overall the pace stays exciting without becoming too fast or confusing. A guide at the back helps with tracking the many characters and locations, although readers will still want the first book fresh in mind when reading this one. The "greed is destructive" theme comes on strong sometimes, but Rocketo is a cool character, and the world he inhabits teems with strange and imaginative life. Espinosa's art continues to give a dreamy, fantastical feeling to the story. Fans of the first Eisner-nominated adventure will definitely enjoy its conclusion and look forward to more.
