All Music Guide - John Bush
Those tempted to dismiss Duffy as only the latest pair of false eyelashes to straggle through the British neo-soul parade owe it to themselves to listen to Rockferry. More authentic than Joss Stone if not as honest as Amy Winehouse (both of these are good things), Duffy may be the best choice of all, whether it's because of or despite the fact that she lacks the force of personality that Winehouse has built her career on, from "F**k Me Pumps" to "Rehab." Duffy's voice can go from angelic to devilish within a few bars, and what she lacks in power and richness (her voice is a little pinched in the higher registers), she easily makes up for in the subtleties and sweetness of her vocal craft, and her ability to carry a ballad with the right combination of drama and flair. The first two tracks, "Rockferry" and "Warwick Avenue," are mirror images of each other -- grand, sweeping ballads with string-laden productions by Bernard Butler and Jimmy Hogarth that become a significant contribution to Duffy's power. Contrary to expectations, her songwriting is more strident than Winehouse's, but it's never delivered with the same type of ballsy swagger. Occasionally, she struggles to live up to the force of her lyrical convictions; her voice sounds younger than Winehouse's, and her best vocal performances come when she's wounded ("Hanging on Too Long"). Butler's production makes her solid voice and intriguing songwriting into an excellent album; although he stays in the background, the occasional guitar flourishes or sweetened strings make Rockferry a better debut than Joss Stone's or Amy Winehouse's.
Rolling Stone - Caryn Ganz
Duffy's Motown- and Dusty Springfield-indebted debut swings with a lounge-y charm.

I love every song on the CD

I am a new fan after hearing the song "Mercy" while shopping in the mall, I had to track down who was singing that song. The whole cd is fabulous. She is so soulful and reminds me a little of Dusty Springfield. It is impossible to be still when you are listening to the song "Mercy", even while in the car.

I'm going to play this one to death

I just saw Duffy on SNL. I thought she was outstanding and so was her band. I had never listened to her music before. I logged on to this site and previewed the cd. I will be at B &amp N as soon as it opens tomorrow. Don't sleep on this one.

    Soulful and Lovely

This is a soulful and unique album. The ballads are both tender and sexy. Duffy's voice is beautiful as always. My favorite songs are: "Rockferry", "Syrup and Honey", "Distant Dreamer", "Warwick Avenue" and "Mercy".

Not what I thought it would be

I was really hoping for more out of this girl with a lovely soulful voice remniscent of Lulu from the 1960s but I was disappointed with most of the tracks. I believe she has so much potential but I wasn't hearing it here.

    Breathtaking and Timeless

I had this album when it was first released and had it "stolen" from me by someone I recommended it to. So I got an itch to listen to it again, so I purchased it AGAIN---and AGAIN, I was blown away. This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, my kind of music but I loved every single second of it. Duffy is so extremely soultry, it makes my heart ache. This album is timeless and undeniably awesome.

    Love Rockferry!!

Saw her on late night TV. Checked her out online. Bought the album and managed to catch her live in Chicago. She's great live as well. Sorta like Macy Gray meets Amy Winehouse music.

    Time Machine

Duffy's voice is perfectly attuned to the CD's song selection that are reminiscent of music from the 50's. It is a delight to listen to, and makes my current top favorites playlist.

    I Also Recommend:

You know, I wanted to like her...

but I just can't. Her voice sounds like an old granny's...or even nails on a chalkboard. The only song that she's really famous for is Mercy, and even then, that song is just another "radio-friendly" pop song. The rest of her album pretty much falls flat. I would recommend checking out Adele instead, since her album is 10 times better than this.

    Twistable!!

A great throwback album. Makes you want to get out of your seat and do the twist when you here Mercy. All the other songs are really deep, and you can feel the emotion in the words.

    Simply Amazing

I bought this album randomly in the mall (where I work) and was excited that it was only $9.99 (the cheapest CD that I've found in the mall to date). I listened to it once and fell in love with it instantly. I havent taken it out of my CD player since I bought it, and that was over a month ago! I've seen people compare Duffy to Amy Winehouse, but if you ask me, Duffy is WAY more talented and more entertaining than Amy (save Amy's drunken stupers you get to read about on USA Today).

    Great old school pop

I think this is a pretty good album, I've listened to it off and on over the course of several days, and I like the old school sixties feel of the music. My favorite is the last song, "Distant Dreamer", as it just reminds me of the "Wall of Sound" that Phil Spector did so well. I would say that Duffy's music is comparable to Amy's sound but less harsh, smoother and more consistant. "Warwick Avenue" is perfectly spare and easy, also a very good song! All very enjoyable.
