What People Are Saying

From the Publisher
"Rock n' roll is one of the most important elements at the several dozen Goodguys Rod 'n Custom events we produce each year. Our goal is for people to have a rockin' good time.

Car music comes from all eras, but there's no question that the classic songs set a mood that's hard to beat. On a beautiful day at a state fairgrounds somewhere — anywhere—in the United States, the colors, shapes, chords, and notes, plus all the great people, combine to create an experience that's totally American. What could be better than rock n' roll than the hottest — and coolest — cars? Open this book and you'll see."  Gary Meadors, Founder and President, Goodguys Rod n' Custom Association

“Paul Grushkin’s new book celebrates the wild and wonderful marriage of cool music and hot cars … cars and music, from Elvis to Springsteen and Mustang Sally to Little Red Corvette, tell a tale straight and true as the white line to the horizon. They’re an American love story.” New York Daily News, Nov. 8, 2006

Swank, April 2007

“The book is replete with anecdotes and commentary from famous musicians, as well as ‘ordinary’ rock-n-rollers who’ve loved rock and cars equally with a passion. If you’ve ever dug a rock tune or driven in an American car you should own this book.”

Road and Track, May 2007

“The book is superbly researched and hardly misses a lyric or car reference in the long history of Rock and Roll. The photos and illustrations alone are worth the price.”

Automobile, February 2007

“It’s heartening to know that there are others out there in the world with a love of music so completely intertwined with a love of cars that you can’t tell where or when one stops and the other begins … Paul Grushkin’s book … takes us down memory lane, past Commander Cody, Asleep at the Wheel, and back to 120 East Liberty.”

Octane (UK), January 2007

“It’s one of those books that’s impossible to put down once you start leafing through it …  Rockin’ Down the Highway is loud, thrilling and utterly engrossing.”

Classic & Sports Car

“A wonderful entrée to a never-ending subject and it’s hard to see how it might have been better executed without being a hugely expensive multiple-volume epic. Some of the illustration is simply breathtaking … It is simply a lovely thing.”

Rod and Custom Magazine, September 2007

“Part encyclopedia and part scrapbook, this book is completely packed with 800 photos and descriptions of starts, cars, car culture artists, album covers, interviews and concert posters. It’s about cars and rock, but what it’s really about is cars as an expression of personality.”

New Zealand Classic Car, Book of the Month, July 2007

“The book is lovingly illustrated with many never-before-seen photographs … It all makes for a convincing argument that rock ‘n’ roll is synonymous with car culture – easily the book of the month.”

    Rockin' Down The Highway Rocks!

Rock `n¿ roll is cool music, of that we can have no doubt. From Chuck Berry and Elvis, to the newest stars of 2006, rock n roll does, in fact, appear to be ¿here to stay.¿ And cars have been a big part of rock since the early days. Whether you were revving up your Little Deuce Coupe, if you were Born to Run, or Born to Be Wild, or just roaring down the road in your Little Red Corvette, the cars have been there all along. Paul Grushkin¿s book, Rockin Down the Highway celebrates this marriage of cool with photos, stories, cartoons, art and much more, bringing cars and rock together in a big, very attractive package. The book is as fun to read as it is to look at, with all varieties of entertaining anecdotes and tidbits from Mr. Grushkin and other contributors, ranging from well-known rockers and rock writers to ordinary rock fans recounting the pleasure of the open road, stereo blasting out their favorite tunes. This is a big, lovely style book, lavishly illustrated and beautifully composed. It would go beautifully on the coffee table of any rock fan!

    Rockin' Down the Highway

Rockin¿ Down the Highway by Paul Grushkin on Voyageur Press is a superb book about cars. It¿s about rock & roll songs about cars, and rock & roll stars and their relationship to their cars. Packed with fabulous photos of stars like Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, The Jackson Five, The Four Tops, Janis Joplin, and so many more that there isn¿t enough room here to list, this book takes you on a fantastic back-stage tour of the stars and their cars. If you are more motor-head than rock & roller you won¿t be disappointed. From the little deuce coup to Elvis¿ gold Cadillac to Springsteen¿s broken down GMC pickup truck to Cadzzilla, to the Dodge Demon this book displays some of the hottest and most creative vehicles that rock & rollers drove and sang about. Paul Grushkin¿s book is a brilliant combination of the two most important icons of the rock & roll era, cars and stars. The brilliant photos, posters and memorabilia along with the stunning art work rates this book five stars in my book. It is a must have. Richard D. Whiteford Rock & roll talent agent at International Creative Management in the 70¿s.

great, great book about cars and rock & roll

I got this book for my husband. He's a car guy, and he loves to listen to rock & roll in his Trans-Am (and so do I, 'cause I grew up on classic rock). So when I saw this book had just been published, I jumped on it. I took a look at it before I stashed it away for him for Christmas, and I was floored. TONS of great photos, art, and historical pieces like rare records. And I spent some time reading a few of the stories too. The author did a great job. My husband will be blown away, I just know.
