Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Pearl hears her brother and sister singing in the nursery. So how is it that when she enters to bring them to breakfast, they're not there? The window is open, three rocking horses are also missing, and there seem to be hoof prints on the lawn below. That these clues could be connected to the children's disappearance seems farfetched, but Pearl's accustomed to unusual goings-on around her siblings. Knowing that her mother will worry until the children return, Pearl sets out to find them. She follows their tracks to the gate, but there is turned away by the arrogant and vaguely menacing boy named Thomas, the grandson of a neighboring earl. It's not easy to shake Pearl, though, and soon she is once again following the tracks to the triplets. In addition to Thomas and the rugged Scottish terrain, Pearl must take on an angry rocking horse, her brother's ambition, and power-hungry magicians. Will Pearl be able to save her brother and sisters from danger, and bring them home to their troubled mother? Although this book is set in the Scottish Highlands in the 1920s, the thick magical realism imbues it with an otherworldly feel. It is a captivating tale with many timeless themes, including love, destiny, trust, choice, and family. Recommended for public, school and home libraries. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
