Children's LiteraturePreviously published in two volumes, this latest edition unites all aspects of geology—from the earth's core to the atmosphere's stratosphere—in a colorful, picture-filled format. Many earth science topics are covered, and many of these topics conclude with a project allowing kids to actively understand the complex concepts discussed; there are a total of 30 projects. Some of the projects include: making rocks, making crystals, determining what soil is made of, folding techniques to understand plate tectonics, and a water activity to learn about ocean currents. Fact boxes in the form of sidebars are scattered throughout listing information that builds upon the subject discussed. A comprehensive glossary defining the geology terms are also included. Since the publisher is located in England some of the text follows British English, but it is not overwhelming and should not distract young readers; and, all temperatures are listed in Fahrenheit. Overall it is a great resource for elementary or middle school science teachers that cover geology, as well as parents of budding scientists. 2004, Southwater/Anness Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.
