The format for this series of "True or False" readers stays the same. There are twenty-two questions with a photograph on every page. Once you have read the question and tried to answer it correctly, turn the page to see if you were right. The subject is rocks and minerals and from an early age kids usually see and encounter rocks. All rocks are made of minerals and crystals are found inside them. What is amazing is that there are 4,000 kinds of minerals but only about fifteen of them produce rocks that we consider gemstones that include diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. The earth is made up of rocks and the rocks found on the moon are very similar to those from the earth only older. Rocks can be hard or soft and light or heavy. Readers learn that there are three types of rocks—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each is explained in detail along with interesting examples. Fossils for instance are always found in sedimentary rock. Marble is a hard metamorphic rock that was once the soft sedimentary rock limestone. The pictures are clear and excellent choices to help explain the concepts presented. While targeted to young readers, this book would be of interest to most readers and could be used for older students not reading on grade level and also in classes where English is taught as a second language.
