    thousands of words, few pictures

First, this book only dedicates two thirds to the encyclopedia portion, despite the title. The rest is how-to filler which can be found in every other general gardening book. Second, the encyclopedia is too broad. It seems to try to cover the whole US, and narrow regional plants (and some shrubs for some reason) are included which wouldn't be so bad except that . . . Third, the organization is poor, so zone classification and plant culture is not easy to glean from each listing - unlike in the two books listed below, which are admittedly not about perennials. Fourth, the biggest strike is that there are far, far too few pictures. The books tries to describe all sorts of cultivars - like all the types of lilies, the book describes 24 different kinds, but gives only two tiny pictures of lily plants. A picture is worth a thousand words for learning about a species' size, habit, leaf form, blossom form, etc., and this encyclopedia falls flat on doing anything but providing a dry written list of many plant options. Overall, it feels like a cut-and-paste job rather than a labor of love.
