Overview

A classic reference book that has been used by millions all over the world, Roget's International Thesaurus is the product of more than a century and a half of continuous expansion, reorganization, and improvement. Today, this book is not only the most time-tested and bestselling thesaurus ever, but, newly revised, it is also the most up-to-dateand comprehensive reflection of theEnglish language as it is currently used.

The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Peter Mark Roget's first edition in 1852 was the development of a brand-new principle: the arrangement of words and phrases according to their meanings. Dr. Roget's system brings together in one place all the terms associated with a single thought or concept; it allows a wide-ranging survey of language within a book of relatively modest size, without the space-consuming repetitions that so severely limit the scope of thesauruses arranged in a dictionary format with A-to-Z entries. This brilliant organization makes Roget's International Thesaurus both the most efficient word finder and a cutting-edge aid in stimulating thought, organizing ideas, and writing and speaking more clearly and effectively.

This revised and updated sixth edition features thousands of new words and phrases, including the newest slang words and expressions that color and inform everyday language. At the same time, it retains all of the hallmarks that have made Roget's international Thesaurus an enduring classic:

  • More than 330,000 words and phrases organized into 1,075 categories.
  • A pinpoint reference system that directs the user quickly from a comprehensive index to the numbered category of the right word. Thousands of cross-references throughout lead to other helpful categories.
  • Hundreds of supplemental word lists that supply the names of things which have no synonyms (measurements, wines, weapons, animals, state mottoes, and more) as well as hundreds of quotations that amplify the meanings of selected words.

Generations of students, writers, editors, and speakers have made Roget's the most popular word reference book next to the dictionary. Continuing a legacy that dates back more than 150 years, Roget's International Thesaurus is an indispensable work for everyone who wants to use the English language with clarity and precision.

Foreword

by Barbara Ann Kipfer, Ph.D.

In developing this new edition, I chose to focus on the modernity and scope of the language coverage. We live in the Internet age, making Roget's International Thesaurus ever more valuable. It can now be used in the wording of queries for search engines accessing the World Wide Web. To this end, I have included as many new words and phrases as possible, from general vocabulary to scientific and technological terms.

The lists have been revised to add new terms, delete obsolete ones, and expand treatment. Quotations were retained if they could conceivably be valuable in a user's writings. Otherwise, unuseful quotations and outdated terms were set aside to make room for new synonyms, additional synonyms, and new lists.

I wish to acknowledge the help, support, and guidance of Dr. Robert L. Chapman. I am honored to have been his choice of successor.

I also thank John Atkins for his work in preparing the computerized manuscript. My editor, Greg Chaput, has worked hard to bring the project to fruition -- and a successful publication. George Alexander and Donna Ruvituso have done a wonderful job putting this all together technologically and typographically. There was also a helpful list of errors in the previous edition, contributed by Dr. Tracy Mansfield of International Neural Machines.

No one is luckier than I to have the time and the environment I need to complete such a massive undertaking. To that I owe gratitude to my husband and frequentcollaborator, Paul Magoulas. To him and to my sons, Kyle and Keir, I would like to repay their love and encouragement.

    A reviewer

Roget's International Thesaurus 6th Edition edited by Barbara Ann Kipfer,PhD and consulting editor Robert L. Chapman,PhD is the most 'unprecedented' piece of tool available than any other thesauri I've ever seen. As a Junior in high school heading toward the Senior year this amazing tool has helped me with accomplishing the most important and excruciating essay assignment I've never done before. I had to use more than just the thesaurus from the Microsoft Word application. I have to choose a higher level of words within the essay assignment. ...that's where this thesaurus kicks in... The thesaurus gives me the oppurtunity through developing a higher standard level of words I never knew (while doing the assignment). It's great to learn those big words and use them as a practical use in communications later in the future. I've had this book since yesterday, and the neat thing I saw in this thesaurus is that it doesn't waste much of its space just for sentence examples or defining (like any other thesauri I've compared) instead more synonyms (words) to choose from. The thesaurus is not as complicated as I suspected to be. Learned how to use it in 10 minutes.

    Love the Thesaurus

I always use the thesaurus in Microsoft Word at work and figured why not have a hard copy for finding new and interesting words when sending letters. Ah, the lost art of writing letters, instead of texting and emailing. This is a great book. I love all the different cross references.

Skip this book unless you love words and have lots of time to waste

The index is so tiny (43 pages in a 900 page book) that you will almost never find the word you want.
