Rogue Countries: Background and Current Issues
While the preface of this work rightly recognizes that "the term 'rogue countries' has come to those countries which disagree with the United States' official policy and refuse to play the roles assigned to them," the purpose of this work is not to criticize U.S. policy towards these countries or explore the reasons behind their conflicts with the United States. Rather, in chapters covering Afghanistan, Cuba, Libya, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and North Korea, contributors simply provide an overview of past and current policy towards these countries, sometimes with significant distortion (such as when it is implied that the U.S. government has strenuously objected before September 11, 2001 to the depredations of the Taliban rulers on the Afghan people). Additionally, since the material stems from before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, much of the material has become instantly dated, as when it is suggested that "Syria and Afghanistan pose no serious problems for the U.S."
