Overview

What happens when America's most lethal military contractor becomes uncontrollably powerful?

Newly inaugurated President Joseph Gardner pledged to start pulling U. S. forces out of Iraq on his first day of office—no questions asked. Meanwhile, former President Kevin Martindale and retired Air Force Lieutenant-General Patrick McLanahan have left government behind for the lucrative world of military contracting. Their private firm, Scion Aviation International, has been hired by the Pentagon to take over aerial patrols in northern Iraq.

Yet when Iraq quickly re-emerges as a hot zone, can the president rein Scion in? And just where does McLanahan's loyalty ultimately lie: with his country, his commander-in-chief, his fellow warriors . . . or his company's shareholders?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This solid techno-thriller from bestseller Brown (Shadow Command) focuses on Scion Aviation International, a private security contractor providing mission support to the dwindling U.S. military presence in Iraq. Operated by a maverick former air force general and a former U.S. president, Scion has resources, expertise and connections that cause resentment among active-duty American troops in the region. When Kurdish terrorists attack Turkey using Iraqi territory as a haven, the Turkish military follows precedent set by the U.S. itself in attacking terrorist bases, which brings them into contact with U.S. forces. While the current president attempts to cool tensions, Scion takes action that not only strains relations between NATO allies but also reveals the company's possession of a technological superiority that poses a destabilizing threat to the region. While Brown delivers plenty of red meat action, he leaves questions of loyalty and accountability unresolved. (June)

Library Journal
In this action-filled 15th entry in Brown's (www.megafortress.com) Patrick McClanahan series—following Shadow Command (2008), also available from Recorded Books—the retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant-general is working for a private contractor with the mission of patrolling the skies in northern Iraq. The narration by William Dufris, who's read previous works in the series, is a bit overdramatic, and his dialog and accents are sometimes clichéd, but Brown devotees will enjoy this production. Another Classic Thriller!

Dale Brown is a can't miss author. I've read every one of his books and they are all fast moving, thrilling, can't put down and enjoyable reads. He is one of my top 10 authors. Comparable to Tom Clancy in many ways. Highly recommend it for those interested in military thrillers.

Dale Brown needs a new schtick

I was disappointed by this book. The characters were unoriginal and the plot was boring. I would not recommend this book.

    Rogue Forces by Dale Brown

Another winner for Dale Brown! It always amazes me how he manages to weave thrilling novels out of real world international tensions, situations and political intrigue. The one thing I did not like about this novel was the lack of a high-tech combat aircraft like the EB-52 Megafortress or the XR-A9 "Stud". Instead of a fancy bomber or fighter, McLanahan uses a stealthy TRANSPORT. Although with a distinct lack of air combat, violence nonetheless ensues as the Turkish army invades Iraq to suppress the Kurdish terrorist groups and Scion Aviation International, McLanahan's private contracting firm, is called into action to defend Iraq. Score one for Dale Brown!

Dale Brown is one my most favorite authors. I have all of his books in hardcover.

As usual for Dale Brown he writes a very good book. Once I start reading one of his books, I cannot put it down until the last page. The story line just keeps your attention all the way through it. Keep them coming, you write them and I will keep reading them.

    DBRF

Dal Brown Rogue Forces= DBRF. You have to get to know your acronyms to read a Brown book. He has a great imagination and a real grip on military lingo. Unfortunately, it really gets in the way of the story. The casual reader will be lost and only the military experts able to follow closely. My eyes glazed over numerous times as I tried to keep up, but mostly I just didn't get it. The guys with the gadgets are better than the US Forces is all I could tell. We should give in to them and let them run the show. Oh, there was a war with Turkey somewhere in there as well.

    I Also Recommend:

    The new Dale Brown

It was a lot like the last couple of books, the only difference was the who the country we went to war with. The plot stays the same the cast of bad guys just change names. It usually consists of an uncaring administration until American lives are lost or foreign lives are lost in the press. Then the current administration boot straps the good guys until a last minute hail mary plan is formed to save the day.
