Description: This book uses a comprehensive competency framework based on the AACN Baccalaureate Essentials, the IOM recommendations, QSEN Competencies, and other standards to guide nursing students in their professional role development.
Purpose: According to the editor, the goal is to provide a resource to guide nursing students in their journey into professional nursing practice.
Audience: The audience is undergraduate nursing students.
Features: The book is divided into two units. Unit I consists of nursing foundational material including history, theory, ethics, and socialization into the nursing role. Unit II addresses patient care issues and the future direction of nursing. New to this edition is the inclusion of the Nurse of the Future: Nursing Core Competencies, which are threaded throughout the chapters. Each chapter also includes objectives, key terms and concepts, critical thinking questions, case studies, classroom activities, and competency boxes, which link examples of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) needed by nurses and nursing students to the core competencies. A companion website offers many instructor and student resources.
Assessment: This book covers a plethora of nursing topics in an easy-to-understand format. Its strength lies in the incorporation of the Nurse of the Future: Nursing Core Competencies and other standards and recommendations throughout. All of the faculty and students resources only enhance the utility of the book. It provides many avenues for teaching and learning that should accommodate any learning style.
