Meet the Author

A graduate of Syracuse University who had played piano with jazz bands from the age of fourteen, Raymond Gantter was the program manager of the major radio station in Syracuse when he turned down his third draft deferment and entered the army. At thirty years of age, nearly six feet tall, and 130 pounds, Mr. Gantter made an unlikely infantryman, but in six months he went from private to acting squad leader to acting buck sergeant before being awarded the Silver Star and a battlefield commission. He began to write the journal that became Roll Me Over in September 1944 and finished the manuscript in 1949. He died in 1985, survived by his wife and two children.

    Read this book only if you want to read page after page of pissi

    Read this book only if you want to read page after page of pissing and moaning, that privates are all geniuses but anybody with any rank higher are monsters. The thing that really got to me about this book is that Gantter asked for everything that happened to him and then does nothing but bellyache after he gets it!

    Run Away From This Book As Fast As You Can

    This book is a waist of time. This was not written by a man who fought in wwii but by a antiwar anti American bla bla bla person posing as a wwii vet. It is filled with inaccuracies and I mean a ton of them things that could not possible have happened at the time of wwii. In the first few pages I new I was duped but I gave it a chance. Most of the book simply talks about (who ever wrought it) their feelings about America and war very little about the war its self. If you are interested in wwii then don¿t get this book. If you hate America and just want to surround yourself with negative false propaganda then this is the book for you.

    AS A WW2 AMATUR HISTORIAN I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF BOOKS,FICTION AND NONFICTION,ABOUT THE WAR AND DON'T REMEMBER ANY AUTHOR WRITING WITH AS MUCH AS CYNICISM AND SELF PROMOTION AS GANTTER.HE WRITES AS THOUGH HE'S THE ONLY GI WITH ANY FORMAL EDUCATION AND TRIES TO PROVE IT WITH HIS HIGH DOLLAR PROSE.WITHOUT ANY DOUBT,THERE WERE INCIDENTS OF BRUTALITY, COWARDICE AND ABUSE BY US PERSONEL BUT IF YOU WERE ONLY TO READ THIS BOOK ABOUT THE WAR YOU WOULD COME AWAY WONDERING IF THE GOOD GUYS REALLY WON.I'M SORRY I WASTED MY MONEY ON THIS BOOK AND WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

    I liked the book. It starts out a little slow but it sheads light into a war hollywood has fictionalized. It will give you an appriciation for what the men who served had to live through daily. I would like to thank any veteran of any war reading this for what they have done for the country. As a historian I really appriciate it.
