Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Zipping almost straight down at a 97-degree angle is thrilling. Riders get this experience when they go on the roller coaster called the Wild Boar. The Nemesis, another coaster, does a loop-the-loop where riders go upside down and back. This book is one from the "Fast Facts" series, and it showcases roller coasters from all over the world. The format consists of short blurbs of text plus fast fact sidebars with extra information. In addition, pages contain web addresses where readers can view various coasters in action. Bright and colorful photos of the featured roller coasters enhance the text and get readers wondering just how it feels to ride each coaster. Facts include degrees of drop, gravity pull, speeds, and height. Some tower drops are also shown. One starts 1,080 feet above the ground! The book contains information about how roller coasters are built, some old wooden coasters, and roller coaster crashes. This book can be read in parts or as a whole, making it an excellent source for report work. Back material has answers to questions from the text, plus a glossary and a detailed index. While the book is marketed for readers in the fourth grade and up, younger children will be able to glean some information from the text and look at the intriguing photos.
