Beginning as a small city-state and continuing to build a vast empire, Rome controlled land throughout most of Europe and the entire Mediterranean Sea. Not only were the Romans skillful as military strategists, but they were excellent architects and engineers. Borrowing from the ancient Greek builders they contributed the arch and a type of volcanic concrete, enabling them to create larger and stronger structures. As " all roads led to Rome" they were able to spread their ideas while maintaining a strong military control. Many of our modern rituals such as rings and cakes for weddings derive from the Romans. Entertainment for the masses was essential; thus theater, public baths, and blood sports in the Colosseum were enjoyed by the poor and wealthy alike.
