Overview

This epic saga of brotherhood and rivalry, of loyalty and treachery, of victory and death forms part of the indelible core of classical Chinese culture and continues to fascinate modern-day readers.

In 220 EC, the 400-year-old rule of the mighty Han dynasty came to an end and three kingdoms contested for control of China. Liu Pei, legitimate heir to the Han throne, elects to fight for his birthright and enlists the aid of his sworn brothers, the impulsive giant Chang Fei and the invincible knight Kuan Yu. The brave band faces a formidable array of enemies, foremost among them the treacherous and bloodthirsty Ts'ao Ts'ao. The bold struggle of the three heroes seems doomed until the reclusive wizard Chuko Liang offers his counsel, and the tide begins to turn.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is China's oldest novel and the first of a great tradition of historical fiction. Believed to have been compiled by the play-wright Lo Kuan-chung in the late fourteenth century, it is indebted to the great San-kuo chi (Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms) completed by the historian Ch'en Shou just before his death in 297 CE. The novel first appeared in print in 1522. This edition, translated in the mid-1920s by C. H. Brewitt-Taylor, is based on a shortened and simplified version which appeared in the 1670s. An Introduction to this reprint by Robert E. Hegel, Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Washington University, provides an insightful commentary on the historical background to the novel, its literary origins and its main characters.

I may be just some teenager who was introduced to the Era of the Three Kingdoms by Dynasty Warriors 4, but this may be the single best thing I've ever dug up information on. The story, although rather complex, focuses on the the Three Kingdoms of Shu, Wei, and Wu, as each of them attempts to gain total control of China. But first, there are the Yellow Turbans, then the tyrant Dong Zhuo with the invincible Lu Bu serving as his bodyguard, and then Lu Bu himself. And after the Alliance, the three leaders return to their territories and so begins the desire to control China. From the time of the so-called 'Yellow Turban' Rebellion in 184, to the unification of China under the Jin Dynasty in 280, there isn't one page in this book that will cause your attention to stray. I guarantee it.

Recently i hav read this book n played many games that related to this book(lets go dw1234!!!! n RTK romance of the three kingdoms series)after i ordered the *UNABRIDGED* version of this book, i was amazed. the author wrote this book in so much amounts of detail, that (for those of u already read it) wen Xiahou Yuan or Deng Ai died or Sima Zhao took over,i literally cried (i am a Wei fan;) ) because the author wrote so good that u can actully hear, feel, touch, see the charima of Liu Bei, the great ambition Cao Cao possesd and the cunning wit of Zhuge Liang(boo....lol). One of the things that i enjoyed from this book was the similies n phrases people said because they are clear of wat they meant sounds so good. THE WORST THING EVER WAS THAT THE BOOK HAD TO END!!!!!! MAYBE ANOTHER SEVERAL THOUSAND PAGES COULD HAVE DONE IT....well. anyway, this is a must read book for anybody who enjoy historical novels n people who r into battles n strategies n stuff. Well happy reading......

Romance Of The Three Kingdoms is a great book becuase it properly displays the time of the Three Kingdoms which lasted in China from the year 185 to 256. The first volume talks about how the Three Kingdoms in China came to be. It shows how the three emperors, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, and Cao Cao come to power and control the fate of China. The first volume sets the setting and emotion of the book, the second volume describes the rest. This book is highly recommended for personal reading time.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Its so discriptive on how every one felt. When Chou Yu was trying to out think Kongming it was very cool thinking of the ways that Kongming could guess what Chou Yu was trying to do. You must read this book!

I always love Classic books, any culture. I know Homer's epic make me a westerner Bible recreates me a Christian American History imprints her dream on a soul Shakespeare makes world Elizabethan... and soccer makes world one group of lovely intoxicated fanatics. So this book is one of the five greatest books that make reader a Chinese, not by a passport of special paper and authorized stamps, but a part of true epic history that many people lived and struggled. This book is not fiction, but history, in comparison to literature novels, it may lack of inner feeling topic of a human soul, but the purpose of editor was to narrate a nation, a group of people or generations, so this book does not concentrate on any individual. This book should be in a non-fiction section, as culture study book, but much lively than other historical document, that editor Luo Guan Zhong followed ancient Chinese document tradition to modify the document of three kingdom history and compiled as what we read now. So a reader would travel from time machine of paper made to truly experience that era by the genius work of the editor that put the history document in a romantic style without losing its authenticity. This is the flagship of ancient Chinese literature concept of writing is sowed and reaped from historical truth and reality. I love both concept of literature, the genius of creative ability of western and master skill of historical recording of east, in between chasing dream and analyzing reality, we struggle from past to future in flash of life to become human being. If God does not come in next 100 years, this book and other four will be widely received, read and reached. History is our novel, while fiction cannot be created without platform of reality. My goodness, I am stretchy:-)
