Overview

With nine selections drawn from Denon's back catalog, Romantic Piano: Classical Music for Intimate Moments is a compilation in the Radiance budget line that may appeal to fans of lush keyboard music and seekers of relaxing classics. However, the shortness of this disc -- a mere 55 minutes -- makes it less attractive; since the majority of CDs runs to 80 minutes, even among the cost-cutters, this brevity seems unnecessarily stingy. But the pianists presented here are among the leading musicians in Denon's stable, and their performances are tasteful and appropriate for the album's stated purpose. Such artists as Michel Béroff, Yuji Takahashi, Maria-João Pires, among other exceptional performers, will be familiar to listeners who have heard other Denon discs. The peculiarly veiled recording of the Andante grazioso from Schumann's "Piano Concerto" by Michel Dalberto and the Vienna Symphony, under Eliahu Inbal, gives a taste of music for piano and orchestra, which some will enjoy, though others may find this single example among what are otherwise solo piano tracks to be a miscalculation because it sticks out too much. The sound quality somewhat varies between tracks because of the recordings' varied dates and venues, and the timbres of the pianos are noticeably different, with some having much richer tone colors than others.
