The biography on San Salvador's martyred archbishop, Oscar Arnulfo Romero, by the late James Brockman, S.J., is simply the best biography today about Romero. Having dug deep down in the archives of the archdiocese in San Salvador, Brockman gives the reader a unique historical background to understand Romero's thinking and practice - and a vivid description of the opposition Romero gained from the Salvadoran bishops at the time. The book is like an encyclopedia on various crucial incidents in the life of Romero and El Salvador. The extensive footnotes makes the book a must for anyone seriously interested in Romero and the history of the Catholic church in El Salvador. There are many works on Romero available, but Brockman's book loones on the horizon when it comes to giving a contextual understanding of the person, and the man of the church, that gave his life for the poor and marginalized in El Salvador. Was this review helpful?
