Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book, from the "Profiles of the Presidents" series, examines Reagan's life and presidency fairly and objectively. Content details Reagan's childhood through his acting career and transition into politics, two marriages, difficulties and successes as president, and personal strengths, including self-confidence and sense of humor. The book ends on a high note despite Reagan's age-related health issues. Quotes, including those from Reagan, government officials close to him, and historians, are smoothly inserted into the text. A map of the U.S. includes important places and dates in Reagan's life. A Fry readability check indicates a level several grades higher than the publisher's reading level of 4-6, but this book can be used in the elementary grades, since large font, much white space, and numerous photographs, mostly color, add to the visually appealing layout. Backmatter includes a glossary, overview of his life, index, Web and book references and historic landmarks to visit for additional information. A timeline, with events from Reagan's life on the left side of the page and world events on the right, puts information into a broader context. 2003, Compass Point Books, Ages 9 to 12.
