All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Much like fellow L.A. indie boy band Phantom Planet, Rooney is a young quintet who has the right mix of looks, chops, and properly fashionable influences to make waves in a pop music world where retro is once again chic. The similarity doesn't stop there. Rooney ringleader Robert Carmine's real last name is "Schwartzman," which makes his brother, PP, drummer Jason Schwartzman. But famous family mumbo jumbo aside, Carmine and his band are poised with this, their self-titled debut, to prove to both audiences and the music industry that E.L.O. and the Psychedelic Furs aren't just names to drop in interviews, but valid musical reference points that give their giddy, harmony-laden pop its freshly scrubbed sound. Fortunately for Rooney, Carmine and mates Taylor Locke, Ned Brower, Matthew Winter, and Louis Stephens have that shaggy, "aw, this old thing?" fashion sense that has contributed to the success of stylized throwbacks such as Pete Yorn and the Strokes. Fortunately for the listener, the combo backs up its pedigree and grooming with some solid pop songs. "Terrible Person" is a Pretty in Pink-era update with its organ rolls and bopping beat, while the unabashed romanticism of "Blueside" and "Stay Away" is refreshingly un-ironic. The majority of the album is upbeat, sounding at times like a late-1970s version of Hot Hot Heat. This means that Rooney has the ability to channel the brashness of early punk rock while still sounding like a band that came out before that genre truly arrived. The healthy piano-tie vibe that bursts out of tracks like "Sorry Sorry" is emboldened with a shoutable chorus, sure. But while many punk revival acts cut their 1960s, '70s (and '80s) pop influences off at the knees, or pare them down to the quick, Rooney leaves them un-trimmed. Can busy, naïvely romantic verse make an album plod along and become a bit of a nuisance? Yes, and this is where Rooney starts to fail, since the majority of their debut's 11 songs are dominated by Carmine's wordy verses. However, the band largely avoids this pratfall by working with producers Keith Forsey (Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs -- hey, wait...), Brian Reeves (Pet Shop Boys? Really?), and Geffen/Interscope kingpin Jimmy Iovine (Alright, now you're just being ridiculous). These older, wiser heavyweights have livened up the combo's songs with layer upon fuzzy layer of vintage-sounding guitars. Of course, it's unclear whether they're actually vintage, but if a software program or microchip'd pedal can flawlessly reproduce the sound of a Vox AC30, isn't there some sort of "digital tribute to analog pop" argument that can be made? If there is, it won't be made here. It will be said that Rooney's debut is a solid pop record, digitized vintage feel or not. It gleefully pulls from the 1970s AOR catalog while donning a skinny piano tie, and makes reference to the vaunted influences of punk and garage only in the band's youthful energy.

Love the band and the sound

I heard Blue Side and the first thing that popped in my head was the Beatles. I am a huge Beatles fan and this is very reminiscent of the early Beatles sound. I love the sound, and the music is upbeat and fun.

    You Won't Be Disappointed.

Rooney Is A Fantastic Band With Some Really Amazing Songs. Robert Writes Really Incredible Lyrics And Sings Them Really Well. Taylor Plays A Mean Guitar, Along With Matthew On Bass. Louie's KeyBoard Is Killer. And Ned Really Has Some Good Drum Beats, Even Though He Plays BareFoot Most Of The Time. I Suggest That Anyone Who Loves Music To Check These Guys Out. They Have Some Real Beach-Boy Vibes, Some May Even Hear A Bit Of The Beatles In The Music. Take A Listen.

    Awesome

Rooney is one of my favorite bands. I admit that I haven't heard of them until I saw that episode of the OC, but after that I've become hooked. I have loved Robert Carmine since The Princess Diaries, and this album is sooo good. I can't wait until their next album.

    Good music...

The first time I heard I'm shakin i thought it was a good song but once I listened to the rest of the album i realized that the whole album rocks. I like the style cause it's like laid-back on the beach relaxing sort of music.

    What a Great Album?

Rooney...what words come to mind? Let's see, how about AMAZING! I first heard of Rooney on the Ramones tribute album, and they did such a great job of covering "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow". Then shortly after that, got there CD and have been in love with it ever since. They remind me of the Beach Boys meets The Strokes/Weezer. Such an amazing combination. My favorite songs is Blueside, Stay Away, If It Were Up To Me and Sorry Sorry, but all of them are really good. I recommend this album to anyone because their sound is like no others. They have the oldies-beach type sound, the 80's new wave type sound, and the indie rock type sound. So pick this album up...it's GREAT!!!

    Tha So Cal Stars

Rooney’s new CD was awesome. I didn’t really expect it to be that good but it really was. I got the CD at a local Hollister and just started listing to it in my car. The beat had such a mellow tone and the lyrics made total sense. Normally I don’t listen to lyrics but on this CD I actually did. They would talk about girls and what not. But it sounded very mellow and original. I loved listening to the whole CD and its really rare when I find a CD with all good songs. You now CD’s all have good songs at the beginning and then toward the end there are the bad songs, well this CD had just AWSOME song throughout the whole album. I think if this CD isn’t in your collection then you should go and buy it NOW!!! After you listen to it you should write your own review and tell everyone how good Rooney is.

    ROONEY ROX

Rooney is one of the best bands I've heard for a long time now. There first song blueside is just a taster for the fantastic album they have out. They are bringing back the rock/punk music The Ramones brought. They are truly fantastic.

one of the best CDs ever

i completely love this CD...all the songs are awesome. the lyrics are great and very unique. "i'm shakin'" is their main hit but that's actually one of my least favorite songs on the CD. i like "if it were up to me" and "sorry sorry" a lot more.

    first-rate

I'd like to start out by saying that I haven't been a rooney fan for a long time, but since their music fits my taste in music, I've become a big fan. The cd in general is perfect, my favorite song is Blueside. Not only the way it sounds but the lyrics are real good. It talks about this side that most people have, and i feel really identified with the song! I can't explain what I feel about my music, its everything to me, and Rooney is a part of my music, it makes an inexplicable difference to the mood I'm in. I don't know if this review helped you, other than this I can say that if you like The Strokes you'll probably like Rooney.

    Music of the 60s lives!

If you grew up listening to music of The Beatles, The Beachboys and The Kinks, you'll love this debut CD by Rooney. Their sound is so pure and each track is an original song, full of great guitar hooks and perfectly blended harmonies. The melodies and lyrics are contagious and you'll find yourself singing at the top of your lungs, wishing you were cruising down PCH. This 50+ fan never tires of listening to Rooney and I can't wait for their next album. This is a must for anyone who enjoys good rock & roll. Give it a listen.

    Awesome CD

I picked this cd after seeing Ronney perform at the taping of pepsi smash. I was a little hesitant thinking that like other bands it would only contain a few good songs. I was wrong. Every track on ROONEY was excellent. Rooney has a very unique sound that i can only describe as pop rock without selling out. They have a very beachy/california vibe which translates into easy listening that doesn't put you to sleep. Their music doesn't discrimminate, i think that everyone kind find something to connect with in the lyrics.

    Debut CD Rocks!

This is Rooney's first debut cd and it is amazing. Their lyrics are original and fun to listen to. Each song has a seperate story and fills your head with it. The vocals, provided by Robert Carmine, are great. His voice is soothing and calm. The beats alone are amazing as well. For instance in the song "Daisy Duke", you hear so may things going on at once. Like the tambourine to the guitar to the keyboards and etc. Either way go out and buy this album NOW!!
