Overview

Much like fellow L.A. indie boy band Phantom Planet, Rooney is a young quintet who has the right mix of looks, chops, and properly fashionable influences to make waves in a pop music world where retro is once again chic. The similarity doesn't stop there. Rooney ringleader Robert Carmine's real last name is "Schwartzman," which makes his brother, PP, drummer Jason Schwartzman. But famous family mumbo jumbo aside, Carmine and his band are poised with this, their self-titled debut, to prove to both audiences and the music industry that E.L.O. and the Psychedelic Furs aren't just names to drop in interviews, but valid musical reference points that give their giddy, harmony-laden pop its freshly scrubbed sound. Fortunately for Rooney, Carmine and mates Taylor Locke, Ned Brower, Matthew Winter, and Louis Stephens have that shaggy, "aw, this old thing?" fashion sense that has contributed to the success of stylized throwbacks such as Pete Yorn and the Strokes. Fortunately for the listener, the combo backs up its pedigree and grooming with some solid pop songs. "Terrible Person" is a Pretty in Pink-era update with its organ rolls and bopping beat, while the unabashed romanticism of "Blueside" and "Stay Away" is refreshingly un-ironic. The majority of the album is upbeat, sounding at times like a late-1970s version of Hot Hot Heat. This means that Rooney has the ability to channel the brashness of early punk rock while still sounding like a band that came out before that genre truly arrived. The healthy piano-tie vibe that bursts out of tracks like "Sorry Sorry" is emboldened with a shoutable chorus, sure. But while many punk revival acts cut their 1960s, '70s (and '80s) pop influences off at the knees, or pare them down to the quick, Rooney leaves them un-trimmed. Can busy, naïvely romantic verse make an album plod along and become a bit of a nuisance? Yes, and this is where Rooney starts to fail, since the majority of their debut's 11 songs are dominated by Carmine's wordy verses. However, the band largely avoids this pratfall by working with producers Keith Forsey (Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs -- hey, wait...), Brian Reeves (Pet Shop Boys? Really?), and Geffen/Interscope kingpin Jimmy Iovine (Alright, now you're just being ridiculous). These older, wiser heavyweights have livened up the combo's songs with layer upon fuzzy layer of vintage-sounding guitars. Of course, it's unclear whether they're actually vintage, but if a software program or microchip'd pedal can flawlessly reproduce the sound of a Vox AC30, isn't there some sort of "digital tribute to analog pop" argument that can be made? If there is, it won't be made here. It will be said that Rooney's debut is a solid pop record, digitized vintage feel or not. It gleefully pulls from the 1970s AOR catalog while donning a skinny piano tie, and makes reference to the vaunted influences of punk and garage only in the band's youthful energy.

Editorial Reviews

Rolling Stone - Jenny Eliscu
Elaborate, sunny vocal harmonies crowning anthems that cross the Beach Boys with Weezer.
Entertainment Weekly - Jason Adams
[Rooney is] full of good hooks and Weezeresque melodies that beg for mindless beachside toe tapping. (B)

Rooney's witty and catchy music is extremely addicting. Rooney has such a unique sound -- rock with just the right amount of pop. Their songs are carefully constructed, consisting of smooth vocals, outstanding guitar riffs, powerful bass and drum lines, and brilliant keyboard melodies. There is no doubt that the members of Rooney are very talented. Their music is hip enough to be enjoyed by people of all ages. After listening to the CD, you'll be humming and dancing along, wishing you were by the beach in sunny SoCal.

If you haven't heard Rooney yet, then you must, must buy this cd. This group has real talent that is both intelligent and soulful. With a sound that both flows and moves you, Rooney is a band with a sound all it's own. With songs like "Popstars", "Sorry Sorry", and "If it were up to me", their latest cd is simply a taste of all that Rooney is. Rooney is here to stay.

I highly suggest picking up this CD to everyone. It's a GREAT record full of songs that everyone can relate to. There is not one song on the record that anyone would skip when listening to it. And I also highly suggest checking out Rooney live to those who haven't seen them yet. So pick up the album and then pick up tickets to check out Rooney live. You will not be disappointed!

The first time I heard I'm shakin i thought it was a good song but once I listened to the rest of the album i realized that the whole album rocks. I like the style cause it's like laid-back on the beach relaxing sort of music.

I'd like to start out by saying that I haven't been a rooney fan for a long time, but since their music fits my taste in music, I've become a big fan. The cd in general is perfect, my favorite song is Blueside. Not only the way it sounds but the lyrics are real good. It talks about this side that most people have, and i feel really identified with the song! I can't explain what I feel about my music, its everything to me, and Rooney is a part of my music, it makes an inexplicable difference to the mood I'm in. I don't know if this review helped you, other than this I can say that if you like The Strokes you'll probably like Rooney.

Rooney is one of the best bands I've heard for a long time now. There first song blueside is just a taster for the fantastic album they have out. They are bringing back the rock/punk music The Ramones brought. They are truly fantastic.

This is Rooney's first debut cd and it is amazing. Their lyrics are original and fun to listen to. Each song has a seperate story and fills your head with it. The vocals, provided by Robert Carmine, are great. His voice is soothing and calm. The beats alone are amazing as well. For instance in the song "Daisy Duke", you hear so may things going on at once. Like the tambourine to the guitar to the keyboards and etc. Either way go out and buy this album NOW!!

This cd is sheer genius. The lyrics compliment the sound. Unlike most rock bands, the sound is balanced almost perfectly allowing no single part to outshadow the rest. Fast tempo songs like "Blue Side" are just as memorable as ballads like "That Girl has Love." Not a single track serves as a place holder between good songs, they are all great! This cd is essential to any collection.

I heard Blue Side and the first thing that popped in my head was the Beatles. I am a huge Beatles fan and this is very reminiscent of the early Beatles sound. I love the sound, and the music is upbeat and fun.

I don't actually have the C.D. itself, but I saw Rooney as a warm-up band for the Strokes in Los Angeles. They were great! Ever since that concert I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this album. I've heard at least half the songs on this album multiple times, and let me tell you, this is quality stuff. A must have for all rock fans.

Rooney's first full length album is the best that it could be. They include some of their best stuff, like Daisy Duke and If it were up to me. This quintet fits perfectly together, and it shows through their music. Their sound is different then a lot of the stuff that is being played on the radio now. I think that you should all go and buy the album asap!! While you're at it check out the bands website too, it'll give you your fill of rooney.

As everyone elses reviews show...Rooney has created that most amazing at total package album I have heard in a long time. This is one of those CD's you buy that you can enjoy EVERY track, therefore getting your moneys worth. These songs will be stuck in your head all day long. Blueside is the single, and if you havent seen the video you need to-it demonstrates the quality and character of this band. They dont fall into the category of poppy-punk massproduced bands that have been flooding the radio recently, rooney is original and I look forwards to hearing more great music created by them

Rooney- No wonder they have been compared to such great bands as The Cars and Weezer. Besides their talents, which you can definately hear on "Daisy Duke", they're also some good looking boys! Daisy Duke is a masterpeice. The only song I didn't enjoy as much is "Stay Away". Their sound is a mixture of the 60s and the 80s. In conclusion, it is a great CD. I encourage you to go buy it, because I enjoyed it, and keep on enjoying it.

If you grew up listening to music of The Beatles, The Beachboys and The Kinks, you'll love this debut CD by Rooney. Their sound is so pure and each track is an original song, full of great guitar hooks and perfectly blended harmonies. The melodies and lyrics are contagious and you'll find yourself singing at the top of your lungs, wishing you were cruising down PCH. This 50+ fan never tires of listening to Rooney and I can't wait for their next album. This is a must for anyone who enjoys good rock & roll. Give it a listen.

Rooney is a talented group of guys that have been together for awhile now, yet have just released their album. Having been compared to such bands as the Beach Boys and Blur, Rooney has their own unique sound that is hard not to love. Unlike most bands out there now, this indie rock band is sure to impress the listener with their deep lyrics and upbeat tempos that keep you wanting more. Check out this release from Rooney and i assure you you will not be disappointed!!

Rooney’s new CD was awesome. I didn’t really expect it to be that good but it really was. I got the CD at a local Hollister and just started listing to it in my car. The beat had such a mellow tone and the lyrics made total sense. Normally I don’t listen to lyrics but on this CD I actually did. They would talk about girls and what not. But it sounded very mellow and original. I loved listening to the whole CD and its really rare when I find a CD with all good songs. You now CD’s all have good songs at the beginning and then toward the end there are the bad songs, well this CD had just AWSOME song throughout the whole album. I think if this CD isn’t in your collection then you should go and buy it NOW!!! After you listen to it you should write your own review and tell everyone how good Rooney is.
