Though the West Coast boasts its share of fine traditional ska acts, it's pretty much universally acknowledged that the best old-school bands are based in New York, where the epicenter of the ska scene is either depending on your loyalties and musical preferences the prolific and highly professional Moon Ska label whose flagship band, the Toasters, deserves enormous credit for keeping ska in the popular consciousness or the scrappier and more tradition-oriented Stubborn label whose flagship band, the Stubborn All-Stars, are renowned for an almost rabbinic devotion to the music's roots. This is the second compilation focusing on tracks from bands associated with Stubborn, and fans of the old-school will find much to love here. Though the album opens on a weak note, with what sounds like a throwaway track from Dr. Ring-Ding here apparently on loan from the Moon posse, it improves quickly, with particularly nice contributions from the Radiation Kings the wonderfully archaic "Them Try", St. Edward "Good Thing", and Don Khumalo whose Latin ska contribution is especially fine. Where Moon acts often draw on R&B influences, Stubborn bands usually tend more toward reggae and rocksteady, and those who record at the almost-legendary Version City studio benefit from that room's wonderfully swampy, old-fashioned sound; that's the case for many of the bands represented on this collection. Highly recommended.
