Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy Pollock-Gilson
Rory loves lions! One night Rory hears a real lion roar, but his family and friends insist that no lions live nearby. Rory doesn't give up and, much to his deligh,t one Saturday another preschool boy dressed in a lion costume jumps out to play with him in his garden. The children laugh and roar together. Part of the "DK Toddler Book" series, this hard back picture book has sturdy pages to stand up to young children's rough handling. Bright colorful illustrations and simple text make it a good buy for daycare centers, preschools, and story hour programs for two year olds.
Library Journal
PreS-These large, brightly colored books are printed on sturdy, glossy paper. In the first book, Rory loves to roar and pretend in his lion costume. One night, he is sure he hears a lion roar outside. When he tells his day-care friends about it, they suggest that he heard one of the animals they see in the countryside-a cow, pig, horse, or dog. Finally, on Saturday, Rory meets his lion-another little boy in a lion suit. The large brush strokes give the illustrations a finger-painted look. The vibrant colors showing wide-eyed children help to make this an appealing choice for storytimes. In the second book, Silly Goose and Dizzy Duck play hide-and-seek with Clever Fox. Goose hides her head in a pile of leaves while her whole body sticks out. Youngsters will delight in the art and will observe that Duck and Goose are not too bright when it comes to hiding. On the count of five, Clever Fox grabs Duck, ready to eat him. Grizzly Bear appears and saves him, but Duck and Goose scold Bear for frightening away their friend and insist that he now play hide-and-seek. This book is short on plot but the watercolor pictures are nicely done and will bring a chuckle. The illustrations will be more effective one-on-one than with a group.-Janet M.
