Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
‘I find it difficult to believe that one individual could produce such an outstanding textbook, and Dr.Rosai is to be congratulated.… This text has been and continues to be the standard.’ - Human Pathology

‘Dr Ackerman… your star student Juan Rosai has surpassed you! In that process, he has also surpassed himself. By that I mean that he has produced a book that outshines all previous editions. He has also set the bar of excellence to anew and so far unattained height, proving beyond any reasonable doubt that he is not only the leading surgical pathologist of my generation but also a first class medical writer par excellence.’ - Modern Pathology

"I pronounce it without reservation as the best of all the major textbooks in this field. It is still the best surgical pathology textbook for novices entering the specialty. All my residents have bought a personal copy and I hope that many others will follow their example. It is an ideal book to learn the basics, to grow on and retain for later practice. I still enjoy reading it and using it as the first consult for any case requiring some additional reading. Thus, I also recommend it to practicing pathologists as the best desktop reference. It is also the single best refresher for recertification or for just keeping abreast with the latest developments in surgical pathology. I hope that it will be on the shelves of all general medical libraries as the definitive textbook of surgical pathology." - Doody's review service 5 star rating! Reviewer: Ivan Damjanov, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is the 10th edition of the well-known classic of surgical pathology, published for the first time in 1953 by one of the fathers of modern surgical pathology, Dr. Lauren V. Ackerman. The previous edition appeared in 2004; six to eight years seems just the right interval, and thus we could expect the next one by the end of this decade.
Purpose: This is the best known major textbook of surgical pathology written for pathology trainees, but also for practicing pathologists who wish to remain informed about recent developments in the field. It reflects the recent changes in the practice of surgical pathology resulting from the widespread use of immunohistochemistry and molecular biology techniques, as well as the intertwining of surgical pathology with other clinical disciplines, most notably surgery and oncology. The author has accomplished marvelously his stated objectives.
Audience: Although written for pathology residents and fellows, this book also will be used by practicing pathologists, academic pathologists preparing lectures and seminars or conferences for clinicians and medical students. I also see it being used by residents in clinical specialties, and medical students wishing to learn more pathology than found in their clinical textbooks. It is a book that should be on the short list of essential textbooks and/or references for all medical libraries. Although I consider it essentially a single author textbook written by Juan Rosai, some of the chapters have been written by eight other well-known pathologists. Dr. Rosai is one of the leading pathologists in the world, and is considered by most of us as primus inter pares, and the reigning ultimate arbiter of surgical pathology. I cannot name any other pathologist who would have his prestige, his experience and diagnostic acumen, his knowledge and authority, his grasp of problems and literature. Furthermore, I would say that he is one of the best educators, one of the most informative and entertaining lecturers, and in my humble opinion absolutely the best textbook writer among the pathologists I have ever met in the 47 years of my practice of pathology.
Features: The 2,500-plus pages are divided into 31 chapters covering all the organs of the body. All chapters are comprehensive and include a discussion and description of neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions seen in surgical pathology practice. The technical aspects of surgical pathology are covered, as well as the ancillary techniques, including special stains, histochemistry, flow cytometry, molecular biology, just to mention a few. Appendixes at the end of the book deal with quality assurance, staging and grading of tumors, and related topics that are important for communication with hospital-based teams of clinical experts. All chapters are profusely illustrated with color pictures of gross and microscopic pathology of the diseases under discussion. Each chapter ends with recent references as well as select crucial papers from the past.
Assessment: I have reviewed three previous editions of this book. Even though I thought each was perfect and doubted that the book could ever be improved, I stand corrected, because I consider this one Dr. Rosai's crowning major opus. In itself this is a remarkable achievement and shows that Dr. Rosai has been able to reinvent himself by living his metier, actively following all aspects of his specialty and methodically over the years picking up new discoveries, and incorporating them into this book. Most importantly, he remains critical of the novelties, accepting some and rejecting others, and always commenting without any equivocation on their value and true contribution. Such a critical approach, applied consistently to all aspects of surgical pathology, makes this book unique, adding an extra dimension. Thus, I pronounce it without reservation as the best of all the major textbooks in this field. I hope that it will be on the shelves of all general medical libraries as the definitive textbook of surgical pathology.

Description:This is the eighth edition of what has come to be regarded as the gold standard text for the practice of diagnostic surgical pathology. Expanded by almost a third since the 1989 edition, the current work provides a wealth of new information relevant to diagnosis and prognosis of a variety of diseases.
Purpose:The purpose in presenting this new edition is to make available new information and to provide expanded coverage of special techniques in immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular pathology that may be of diagnostic or prognostic significance in the routine practice of surgical pathology.
Audience:Although the book is written primarily for the practitioner of surgical pathology, it also serves as an excellent reference for pathology residents and trainees in a variety of surgical disciplines.
Features:The current edition includes more than 1000 new illustrations, almost a third of which are reproduced for the first time in color, and adds new sections on guidelines for pathology reporting and quality assurance issues relating to the practice of surgical pathology. Expanded tabular presentation of diagnostic features, including those dealing with cytogenetic and molecular data, are especially useful.
Assessment:This new edition is a worthy successor to prior versions. It more than meets the author's objectives to provide in an exceptionally usable form, information on advances in diagnostic technology and new concepts of disease mechanisms that are relevant to the practice of surgical pathology.
