Rosai and Ackerman's Surgical Pathology presents comprehensive guidance on every aspect of the field. The New Edition of this two-volume masterwork retains the practical approach that has earned it a loyal following and widespread critical acclaim. At the same time, it delivers expanded and updated content on molecular pathology, immunohistochemical markers, and cytopathological diagnosis. What's more, this definitive reference is now illustrated in full color throughout! Virtually all of its more than 3,900 illustrations are now in full color, providing unprecedented diagnostic assistance. A bonus CD-ROM delivers all of the book's illustrations in digital format.

• Uses a consistent, clinically oriented structure for each organ system chapter, describing anatomy · congenital anomalies · inflammatory disorders · and benign and malignant neoplasms, and then exploring clinical presentation · gross and microscopic features · ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings · differential diagnosis · therapy · and prognosis for virtually every tumor type.
• Contains over 3,900 outstanding illustrations from Dr. Rosai's vast personal collection—nearly all in full color for the first time.
• Presents hundreds of diagnostic pearls detailing Dr. Rosai's expert observations on what to look for when examining a slide of each disease, what to be careful about, and which presentations can be misleading.
• Presents valuable appendices on tumor staging, quality control procedures, and the handling of gross specimens.

• Incorporates all of the major genetic molecular alterations that have recently been described in various types of tumors, especially those of clinical significance
• Delivers greatly expanded or rewritten information on immunohistochemical and genetic features.
• Provides a new chapter on special techniques, including a comprehensive catalog of immunohistochemical markers.
• Includes a new, bonus image bank CD-ROM containing all of the book's over 3,900 full-color illustrations and photomicrographs, easily downloadable for use in PowerPoint® presentations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"An indispensable bench text...Well worth the price, and it is recommended with enthusiasm." —JAMA

"Should have a place on the shelf of every surgical pathologist." —American Journal of Clinical Pathology

"Unquestionably the best surgical pathology textbook available."—Modern Pathology

If I were to recommend only one book (albeit in two volumes) for a histopathology trainee or department to buy, then this would be it.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Fang Fan, MD, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is an updated comprehensive textbook that encompasses all areas of surgical pathology. All the chapters are well organized and illustrated with high-quality color photographs of gross and microscopic specimens. References are up-to-date. No question that this will continue to be the bible for all young pathologists, but it also will remain valuable for the experienced pathologists who want to remain up-to-date and well informed. The previous edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of the entire field of surgical pathology and to update the previous edition. The book meets the objectives.
Audience: Residents in pathology, practicing pathologists. and practicing surgeons are the intended audience. The author is an internationally renowned authority.
Features: All the organ systems are covered, with two additional chapters on gross techniques and special techniques in surgical pathology. Each disease subject is discussed systematically, with the latest information on the immunohistochemical profiles, and major molecular genetic findings. The appendixes are valuable including QC/QA issues in surgical pathology, cancer staging, standardized surgical pathology reporting for major tumor types, and guidelines for handling of the most common and important surgical specimens.
Assessment: This latest edition is, in my opinion, the best, the most comprehensive, and the most useful textbook of surgical pathology currently available. It deserves to be in every pathologist's library.
Reviewer: Wendy M. Recant, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This is the eighth edition of what has come to be regarded as the gold standard text for the practice of diagnostic surgical pathology. Expanded by almost a third since the 1989 edition, the current work provides a wealth of new information relevant to diagnosis and prognosis of a variety of diseases.
Purpose:The purpose in presenting this new edition is to make available new information and to provide expanded coverage of special techniques in immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular pathology that may be of diagnostic or prognostic significance in the routine practice of surgical pathology.
Audience:Although the book is written primarily for the practitioner of surgical pathology, it also serves as an excellent reference for pathology residents and trainees in a variety of surgical disciplines.
Features:The current edition includes more than 1000 new illustrations, almost a third of which are reproduced for the first time in color, and adds new sections on guidelines for pathology reporting and quality assurance issues relating to the practice of surgical pathology. Expanded tabular presentation of diagnostic features, including those dealing with cytogenetic and molecular data, are especially useful.
Assessment:This new edition is a worthy successor to prior versions. It more than meets the author's objectives to provide in an exceptionally usable form, information on advances in diagnostic technology and new concepts of disease mechanisms that are relevant to the practice of surgical pathology.
