Overview

The biography of Eleanor Parke Custis, affectionately known as "Nelly," the granddaughter of Martha Washington, who was adopted upon the death of her father in the Revolution by General and Mrs. Washington, is designed for children but may also be enjoyed by adults. It chronicles the entire life of Nelly from her early childhood at Mount Vernon to the first capitals of the United States in New York and Philadelphia as a much admired and accomplished little girl. The fine character and industrious habits Nelly developed she later credited to the careful rearing by President and Mrs. Washington. The reader will get a new perspective of the "Father of our country," as we see him through Nelly's eyes. One will also gain a new appreciation for Martha Washington and the precedents that the first couple set for the new United States of America. The easy and enjoyable reading is designed to foster strong traits of character in young readers and impress them with an appreciation of George and Martha Washington, as all readers see the first couple through a little girl's eyes. The book goes on to give sketches of Nelly's courtship and marriage, her life as a Virginia keeper of the home, her widowhood, and her golden days at Audley Plantation where she contentedly embraces her role in helping to teach and rear her adored grandchildren. The book has many illustrations, and most are in color. (One must have a color e-reader). Mrs. Roper has added numerous detailed explanations of items mentioned in the book that might be unfamiliar to the modern reader. For example, she tells what a "madder" plant is and what is was used for. Read this book and learn about George Washington's "Ha-ha wall" at Mount Vernon, his home.
