“[Block’s] lush, beautiful words turn modern-day Los Angeles into a fantastical world of fairies, angels, and charms
VOYA - Kelly Czarnecki
A retelling of myths and tales, Roses & Bones takes the reader on a vivid and sensual ride through three books; Psyche in a Dress, Echo, and The Rose and the Beast. Readers who brush up on their mythology before embarking on this journey will have a deeper experience, being able to make the distinction between what is myth and what is real. Psyche's story is told in narrated lines of poetry against the backdrop of an actress being filmed by her violent father. The stories of Persephone, Echo, Eurydice, Aphrodite, and Demeter are woven into a stream-of-conscious retelling; a patchwork of snippets from the myths as we know them combined with the contemporary. Book II tells the story in prose of Echo, whose father is dying. To cope with the inevitable loss, she hangs out at bars or the beach, frequently drinking and meeting men. Book III retells nine fairytales in short story form, each one a magical and riveting scene unto itself. This book is important to add to library collections for Francesca Lia Block fans, but also for those wanting to explore alternative and wild retellings of tales and myths. This book lends itself well to looking at the female role through the kaleidoscope lens that we know Block uses so well. Drugs, sex, anorexia, incest, and other hard-hitting issues are explored throughout the book. Reviewer: Kelly Czarnecki
