Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Partridge
In the cult of movie star personalities, Rosie O'Donnell has genuine appeal. She is nice, generous, and has worked hard to achieve success. Her life story as told in this biography is set against the world of American pop culture in the seventies, eighties, and nineties. It gives a young reader a peek at what it was like for Rosie to work her way to the top. Good qualities like determination and self-confidence make her a positive role model for young women. Rosie is intelligent and gives generously of her big heart to everyone, which gives depth to her stardom. Quite a few of the photographs are pictures of movie stars that were important to her, making the book a little like People magazine for the seventies. Nevertheless, reading about famous people is interesting, and Rosie's good nature and good luck could be inspiring to a young future entertainer. There is an index and sources section in the back for references.

Gr 4-8--A book tie-in to the A & E series "Biography." The text reads like a narration of the TV series, and the result is a breezy, interesting look at a pop-culture icon. Krohn details her subject's rise from stand-up comic to movie star and variety-show host. She also provides glimpses into O'Donnell's personal life--a childhood marked by the tragic death of her mother, and the fulfillment she has found in her two adopted children. Full-color and black-and-white photographs give some glimpses of the media star's early life and career. The book is well documented with extensive source notes, including a personal interview with O'Donnell, giving it a veracity and immediacy lacking in most biographies for young people. A comprehensive filmography and helpful index are appended.--Tim Wadham, Dallas Public Library, TX
