Good picture book for young boys!

The vocabulary is great for young children to hear. The pictures can lead to more discussions with the children then just the story line.

Golden Choice for my 7th Grade Language Arts Class

What an absolutely stunning picture book, colorful, creative and inspiring! My 7th graders were absolutely mesmerized. The story incited much discussion about Steig's rich, colorful use of language and literary devices. Rotten Island magnificently models powerful word choice while stimulating conversation regarding theme. Their wonderful insights amazed me. Transcending the story, my students created wonderful metaphors for the 'flower.' They recognized that something good can come in the midst of even the most difficult situations. They also connected the notion that one person or thing can make a difference in the world.... and so much more. Definitely a great read aloud!

I grew up on 'rotten island!'

I have this book from my childhood, originally titled, 'Bad Island.' All I can really remember about my mother reading it to me is that this dismal, hopeless place inhabited only by unattractive monsters, had a hidden beauty in the end. A flower, simple & beautiful, quietly sprouts in the crack of a sidewalk. From then on, in my whole life including today, I always look for the tiny flower that is in everything. I always find the blooms in piles of rubble & I always see a crack in the asphalt as potential for a flower to grow there. Very few books effected me as deeply as did this one, out of countless stories while I was growing up.
