Overview

The Rough Guide to Shakespeare provides the perfect introduction across all media from the Elizabethan theatre to the modern multiplex. Designed to work equally well as a quick reference and a background companion, the book features full coverage of all 38 plays including a synopsis, character list, stage history and a full critical essay. There are guides to recommended texts, critical studies and further reading, reviews of the best films and audio recordings, and guidance on where to go next. The author provides fascinating features on such topics as swearing in Shakespeare, fools, cross-dressing and the mystery of Shakespeare's lost plays. As well as the plays there''s a detailed look at Shakespeare's poetry, both the famous Sonnets and the less well-known narrative poems. Finally, this handbook includes everything there is to know about Shakespeare's life, along with a full account of how the plays were originally performed. Throughout there are more than 100 pictures, including photos of great Shakespearean actors and some of the most celebrated recent productions.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Books on Shakespeare abound, and it's hard to imagine that there are libraries out there still needing basic material on the Bard, who would have celebrated his 441st birthday on April 23rd. Still, there is room for a reference book like this, and here's why. It's cheap but not cheap-looking; it's accessible even to those who've never read (or liked) Shakespeare but not insipid; it's small in size but far-reaching in scope; and the author, remarkably only in his twenties and with no previous published work under his belt, writes sensibly about times past but skillfully places Shakespeare's work in contemporary context. Refraining from an A-to-Z layout, Dickson organizes the book into three sections, each adhering to a chronological order: "The Plays" covers all 38 of Shakespeare's plays, including for each an introductory paragraph, a synopsis, a list of major characters, critical essays, and more. "The Poems" follows the same pattern, covering all the sonnets as well as narrative poems like A Lover's Complaint, The Rape of Lucrece, and Venus and Adonis. "The Contexts" is dedicated to Shakespeare's life and the world he lived in, providing fascinating details about the acting companies and playhouses he worked for and much more. Bottom Line While not an essential purchase for any library, this unexpectedly entertaining guidebook is filled with Shakespeare lore that even the most well read may not know; it would do well in the circulating collections of most public libraries.-Mirela Roncevic, Library Journal Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
