One of the primary reasons I buy guide books before traveling is to help with the planning of the trip - finding hotels in areas close to the sites I want to see or close to train/bus stations. And while on the trip, I use the maps in the guide books to help navigate the cities I'm visiting. The Rough Guides have never let me down in these respects and I have bought many of their guides in the past.
Since many of their guides are now available as Nook Books, I was excited to be able to carry everything electronically to save space and weight. But there is one major flaw to this idea. The maps are completely unusable!! The maps fill only a tiny portion of the screen (25% or less) and there is no way to zoom in. Not a single notation, street name, or icon on the map is readable.
The only reason I'm giving the guide a 2-star rating is that I'm sure the text of the guide is the same well-researched information I've experienced with Rough Guides in the past and would be of value to learn about various attractions, restaurants and hotels. But unfortunately, I'll have to buy something else to be able to find my way to those sites.
This is a very poor implementation of a good paper book into an e-book.

DO NOT BUY THIS NOOK BOOK. A real ripoff. Bought this despite the first review, thinking at least the text would be useful. Wrong. This seems to be an abridged version with much of the useful historical and access information of earlier versions excised. There is NO INDEX (shame on you B&N!) making it almost impossible to use since the search function doesn't work. I.e., search "Spoleto hotel" and you get nothing. Search "Spoleto Accommodation" and you get nothing, even though the hotels are listed under a heading of "Accommodation" in this book. Maddening! The color photos are very few. And yes, the maps are illegible on your Nook. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
