Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
The Viking civilization only lasted for around 300 years, but its impact upon Europe can still be seen and felt today. The violence and brutality of Vikings has been a mainstay of their history for years, but their culture is much more rich and interesting than suggested at first glance. Corrick provides a new perspective on Viking culture, focusing on the difficult and often unhygienic living situations. The northern countries that the Vikings came from required more care with crops and animals than civilizations in southern climates and, along with the cramped and unsanitary conditions of Viking ships, the author manages to convey the extremely challenging environment theVikings had to live in. At the same time, he presents interesting facts about other aspects of Viking culture. Filled with "foul facts" and colorful illustrations, the text is an adequate introduction to Viking culture. While the text is brief, it also provides a broad range of information about Vikings, including the gods they worshipped and the basic construction of their ships. The text is part of the "Fact Finders: Disgusting History" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
