Gr 1-3-Although highly oversimplified, the Bergers' account conveys a sense of the flow of wealth, the need for a medium of exchange, the forms money has taken, world monetary units, the production of U.S. currency, and how banks work. Sentences are short and clear, and the vocabulary is accessible. Especially well designed, the book has gently realistic and, at times, humorous full-color drawings spaced throughout the text. David Schwartz's If You Made a Million, illustrated by Steven Kellogg (Lothrop, 1989), has a picture-book format, a breathless style, and a much more imaginative presentation. Betsy Maestro's The Story of Money (Clarion, 1993) gives more detail and is written at a higher reading level.
